Wen I was very very young bionicle came out. Now it's back and I miss the old sets but I'm seeing all these masked from the original series in different colors. Like the mask of shielding in white and black and the mask if water breathing in green and red. I remember all the toa having to find five to get the golden mask but did they all come out in real life? I might have been too young to remember that. And, if so, how did you get them?
Yes, those masks did come out in real life! In 2001 you could buy a mask pack for about $2. Each pack came with 2 random masks. The box looked like this:
Below is an image of every mask you could get in that pack. They all were possible to get in the mask packs with a few exceptions. The top row were only available in other sets like the McDonald’s Matoran or Rahi. The bottom five masks were promo exclusives. And the masks in the far left and far right columns were misprints… Masks that were molded in the wrong color. These are very rare! With the exception of the black Ruru, that’s not actually rare anymore since Hafu became a set.

In 2002 there were mask packs that contained 2 random gold or silver Kanohi as well as 3 random Krana. The silver masks of course representing unworn Kanohi, and the gold being what the Toa received for collecting all the masks.
The only way to get these masks now are places like eBay, or Bricklink. Having a full collection is quite a feat now! Here’s a link to a complete checklist of every collectable from 2001-2003.
