Manual therapy is a method performed by physiotherapists to treat patients with skilled hand movements and skilled passive movements of joints and soft tissue.
The only goal of manual therapy is to improve tissue extensibility, increase in the range of motion, mobilize or manipulate soft tissue and joints, modulate pain, change muscle function and improve movement patterns and reduce soft tissue swelling, inflammation or restriction.
There are various techniques that are being used in manual therapy. Some of these are mobilization or manipulation, passive range of motion, manual traction, manual lymphatic drainage, massage, acupuncture or dry needling.
Manual therapy must be combined with specific exercises and techniques because it is an invested therapy and in order to maintain the results achieved with the treatment, it is necessary to do so.
Manual Therapists
Manual therapists are practitioners with a solid foundation of advanced orthopedic knowledge, techniques and clinical reasoning. When they treat a patient, they not only look into their physical problems which is seen or detected easily but they also have to understand how neurophysiology controls joints and muscle function. They should have the knowledge of pain science; they must know about movement and should recognize clinical patterns.
They must put the injury into the context of the entire body and try to understand how social and environmental factor can interact to influence the pain. They must know their patient in and out and then decide when and which techniques of manual therapy should be used.

Manual therapy is like a big umbrella and it let many techniques and methods to reside under it. Manual therapy is not only an intervention; it is a philosophy of performing physiotherapy.
The amount of knowledge and experience manual therapist have in their field is comes from experience. Book knowledge is good, but when it comes to techniques that is also known as hands-on techniques, experience is the best way to learn everything which a different angle.
