Hey tumblr! @tumblr @staff Someone tried to scam me! Watch out for these people!
I’m posting this to give people a breakdown just in case they get into a similar situation and don’t know whether or not it’s real.
I got a message from another user saying how they ‘accidentally’ reported me for phishing/financial scam. They supposedly got scammed by another user and had their friends report my account by mistake
Red flag No. 1 🟥 I thought it was strange how perfectly the other user had underlined and arrowed the most important and scary info, on top of rather formal and quick messages, but I looked into it anyway as the email did look rather legit, and checking their account, it was active with many reposts spanning at least a week.
The email they linked detailed of how my account would be deleted if there was no action taken. And I was taking it seriously as that is a serious consequence.
They told me they did what they could to fix it but ultimately it was up to me to reach out and have things properly handled.
Red flag No. 2 🟥 the contact for tumblr support only had contacts for discord and WhatsApp. Maybe not the strangest thing but why wouldn't Tumblr support have a Tumblr contact?
But I reached out anyway.
I got into contact with ‘Tumblr support’ guy, Ozan Olgu Adiguzel, and he immediately asked for my user handle and email. That seems standard enough so I did it, knowing they couldn’t really do anything with that information alone.
Red flag No. 3 🟥 The support guy repeated that scary information of financial/phishing scam and that how my account would be deleted unless I gave him evidence that I did not do so, and when I explained the situation, it was immediately followed with ‘there’s nothing to worry about’
Red flag No. 4 🟥 is where my alarm bell is really started ringing. They asked for my age and country. This is not information Tumblr should have on your account. it is up to you to share that information
Red flag No. 5 🟥 The support guy showed a certificate proving that he was part of Tumblr support. This never happens when you actually reach out to support teams, but then again you don’t usually reach out to support people off of the app that you’re reporting to.
The final nail in the coffin Red flag No. 6 🟥 is when the support guy told me I would get an email about changing my password, he told me what I would change my password to so he could ‘look over’ things. For those that are maybe less technologically versed that is not normal. Any tech guy should be able to look over your account regardless of whether or not they have your password. DONT SHARE YOUR PASSWORDS.
at this point, I definitely made sure to look up this situation online, and to no surprise, there was a Reddit thread about this exact situation. Even that there were some people even gave these people their passwords and were asked to send money.
The only thing that threw me for a loop at the end was the fact that I got an email from a no reply Tumblr email. Not a weird email with random numbers and letters, but the same email Tumblr always contacts you with. But thinking back, considering they had my email and account handle, they could put that information in the login itself and request a password update to make the whole thing look more legit.
anyway, I pulled the plug
and I also a message to the Tumblr account that was in on it, to which they immediately either deleted their account or blocked me. (I’m gonna guess they blocked me.)
If I am able, I have every intention of reporting this Tumblr user. But please Tumblr community, just look out for stuff like this.
Quick Update
(i’m going to tag the fandoms I reference so sorry if thats annoying)
This scam was attempted against me yet again!
Obviously I could catch it this time from the first message, but it’s only more worrying because this tells me just how common this is. I assume this is the same person doing the scam, so the fact that they’ve come back yet again to my page and didn’t recognize me seems to tell just how much he is doing it.
Something that worries and intrigues me is that this new user attempting to contact me reposted WHA and Project Hail Mary content before messaging me, which are among the fandoms that I’ve been posting about on my page recently. These reposts were of the fandoms that I am in, however, not the exact posts that I was re-blogging, which leads me to believe they did this to appeal to my taste but not to make it look they they were spying on my page specifically. (part of the reason I say this is that both fandom‘s are fairly popular atm and I’m sure their fans have some crossover, but it’s odd that it was these two fandoms together) They did this possibly for credibility and trustworthiness sake. So when they message me I think, “oh well they’re in my fandoms so it’s no wonder that our pages crossed paths and because they’re in my fandoms I can trust them.”
I say this because personally, I almost always check the blogs of the people that message me, and looking out for stuff like this can help all of us see the scam more easily.
So yet again, look put for these blogs, and if anyone links you to Ozan Olgu Adiguzel, report them because that man is a scammer.
