“Five more minutes….” Marie groaned as she slept next to her mother. It was when her mother called once more that she woke up with a big yawn. “remember Adam? Well it seems we too had experienced the same thing. Don’t worry Berlioz and Toulouse are fine.” She snuggled into the bed once more. “I don’t know about you but I feel like i didn’t sleep in days instead of being asleep for two weeks.”

Duchess nodded as Marie explained what happened, and she was glad to hear that Berlioz and Toulouse were fine otherwise she would jump from this bed and run toward them so they could all stay together. “How about Thomas?” She asked also worried about him, Duchess was going to lay back with Marie, since her body still felt heavy, when the next information shocked her again. “What?! Two weeks?!.” How could she had lost two weeks, did she lost Christmas? was  Berlioz and Toulouse okay? She hugged Marie closer as tears filled her eyes, just happy to be able to hold her daughter.

When he had finally received the news that Duchess was awake, Thomas was ecstatic. He had been to see her after she had woken up, but that had hardly been enough, so when she had texted him asking him to come to brunch, he had accepted immediately. Not that he would not have done so at any other time, but he had missed her so much, and he was not going to forsake spending even one moment of time with her now. When Duchess opened the door, he was smiling just as much as she was. “I’m glad you invited me, darlin’,” he said, reaching out to take her hands, “I was so worried about you, I didn’t know what to do. Havin’ you back is like havin’ oxygen in my lungs again.” Thomas would never have thought he would have felt like that, but having been without her had only made it more apparent how important she had become to him, and it was not something he wanted to repeat any time soon.

When she first saw Thomas, she thought he was the type of person that flirted with everyone, and that the second he learned that she had 3 kids he would run as fast as it was humanly possible, so she smiled and flirted back but tried to keep some distance, since the last thing her kids needed was someone to leave them again, she was never so happy to be wrong, and the longer Thomas stayed the more she fall for him, if he was the one that got sick she would also feel like she couldn’t breath anymore, just thinking about it made her shiver. “I’m not going anywhere.” She whispered sweetly as she placed a gentle kiss on his lips, gosh, how she had missed those lips.

Guiding him toward the kitchen she chuckled a little embarrassed seeing how much she had cooked it. “I just realized I don’t know what you like to eat.” she had bacon, eggs, pancakes plain and with chocolate chip, waffles,  toast, French toast, croissant, cakes, cookies, donuts,  juices, coffee, fresh fruit, syrup. whipped cream. “If you have any requests, I’m all ears.”

It felt good to be back home, she still wasn’t exactly sure what had happened, but whatever it was a bunch of people got it too, when she tried to think about what had happened Duchess just got frustrated, so she decided to focus on the present. She knew the doctor told her to keep things light, so she took a few days off, but staying home doing nothing, wasn’t Duchess style, so of course she made too much food, as she put some cookies away in tape wares to take to her kid dorm Duchess had an idea, she grabbed her phone and texted Thomas inviting him for brunch, after all it was the perfect excuse to see him. As she waited, Duchess made sure everything was ready, and the table had everything he could possibly want and when the doorbell rang, she couldn’t help but smile. Opening the door, she smiled. “I’m glad you could make it.”

Marie peaked into one of the rooms, to find her mother still asleep. It wasn’t hard for the girl to connect the dots - so she went to her mother’s side and curled next to her. it wouldn’t be bad to sleep in her arms would it? What would the nurses do? Chase her away? I don’t think so!

The nurse walked by to notice that two people were in the same bed, however, noticing that they were both patients and the girl wasn’t a visit, she decided to allow it since everyone was already having a hard time. After a while, Duchess started to wake up, the first thing she noticed was that Marie was laying with her and of course she smiled it, moved closer to her daughter placing her arm around her and kissing her forehead lovingly, only after a few seconds she noticed that she wasn’t in her bed at home, what was happening? Why were they in a hospital? “Marie? love?” She called her daughter “What happened?”

Wake me up!

Wow! She never went to a party that ended in the hospital before. When she woke she found herself moving weakly out of the room, looking (prying) in all the other rooms to see who else was infected. She wondered who visited her. Tj? Charlie? Anyone?

waking in an empty room had startled her, and she found herself wandering through the halls looking for someone she recognised.

The last thing she remembered was that she was looking forward to the festival, to see her kids having fun, to see Thomas and have the perfect excuse to spend time with him. It was a good sunny day and that was the last thing she remembered. Now she was at the hospital, laying in a bed, still in a deep sleep

To my father

Marie: [Unsent] I'm not handling the situation well

Marie: Oh, well my brothers will definetely change their minds once you meet them. Toulouse will be a tough cookie but you know he has a big heart.

Marie: Well I do know pop and rock as well - its just that I tend to sing jazz and opera more

Marie: I'll meet you when you have time I promise.

Ed: I can't blame him for being a touch cookie, it is my fault for being away for this long. I'm just glad to have the chance to get to know you.

Ed: I will always make time for you from now on. I swear I'm a text away. Whatever you need, you can count on me.

To my father

Marie: I don't...blame you. You didn't know. I don't blame my mother either, this isn't something you two could have done anything about.

Marie: Oh wow you are like actually famous I have heard of your band, thats so cool.

Marie: I like jazz and opera, maybe a bit oldfashioned but I like to think of me as an old soul.

Marie: I'd like that!

Marie: Uhm whenever you have time, i mean the life of a singer is busy right? I don't want to get inbetween your work.

Ed: still, if that happened to me, I don't think I would be handling the situation as good as you're.

Ed: those are classics for a reason. You sound a lot like your mother, I'm sure she's very proud of you.

Ed: so, I guess you opening up a show for me is out of the question?

Ed: I'm finishing a tour, so I will be free soon. I almost cancelled the shows and returned with your mother, shows can always be rescheduled, I don't want to lose another second in your life.

Toulouse was always good at reading his mother’s face. Something was bothering her, and clearly it wasn’t going to be good. At the mention of his father, Toulouse shuddered. Everything suddenly felt cold and numb, like the air had been sucked out of his lungs. “You did what?” That was the only sentence that he managed to get out. When the number was handed to him, Toulouse retracted, backing up. “Yeah, I’m sure he’s fucking dying to meet us, right? I’m sure he meant well, and all of the absent birthday cards and presents and, oh, I don’t know, general care for his children must have just got lost in the mail or something. No, I don’t really feel like hearing from that asshole. I never needed him then and I don’t need him now.”

Duchess should expect that he would react like this, she knew this was a delicate subject, and  after he heard what she had so said those angry feelings might be directed toward hers, but it was okay. Duchess sat down on his bed and tapped next to her, inviting him to sit with her. “Come here.” She invited him with a sweet and calm voice. “Of course you don’t need him. You barely need me anymore.” He was so grown up, sometimes she truly missed being able to carry all of them in her arms. “The thing is, as much as I would love to make your father the bad guy, he’s not. I am.” Duchess said, looking at the floor and avoiding looking at Toulouse. “Trust me, I get it, I was angry at him for very long too. Turns out I was wrong, and you all should be angry at me.” After receiving the money, Duchess didn’t want to have anything to do with him, it never crossed her mind that he wasn’t the one that send the money. “He never knew I got pregnant.”

That would be great, to have her at every show. Hearing her eagerly reply that she would be there made Thomas’ heart swell. He could not have asked for a better show than this evening’s had been, and it had all been because of Duchess. He was amazed to realize that she had inspired him to play even more passionately than he had before, but he could not deny it. “That’ll make all the difference in the world, to have you there. I really loved havin’ you here tonight, and I’d love to know you’d be there in the future too.”

The thought that he would get more offers to play at more places was a great thought as well, and would be necessary in order for him to have shows where Duchess could come to see him. But as good as that would be, Thomas also would even just play for her and her alone. “I’d love that. Gotta have a show to have an audience, right? But just the same, I wouldn’t mind an audience of one either.” As much as his music had spoken volumes, what Duchess did next spoke even more. The way she was looking at him was making Thomas start to feel a growing desire to kiss her, but before he could even think to try, she saved him the trouble. Her kiss was sweet and soft and everything he could have imagined, and he sighed softly against her lips as she deepened it, not hesitating for a moment to kiss her back, just as deeply. When he finally moved just a fraction back, he breathed, “Oh darlin’, that’s the best ovation I could ever have hoped for. Am I right in thinkin’ you want to give this…to give us…a chance?”

Duchess felt like she had completely lost her mind, the last time she kissed someone was almost 22 years ago and that didn’t exactly ended well, she was pretty sure she was just projecting her own desires on him and was about to make a fool of herself, break the kiss, apologize and run home completely embarrassed about her actions, however when she felt him kissing him back, she felt like her heart was going to melt.

“I do.” Duchess answered, moving her thumb gently against his cheek, it was time for her to open up and explore something new. “If my kids haven’t made you run away yet.” She joked it, she knew them could be a lot and most people would have run away already. “You know, I have a piano at my place.” Duchess decided to risk it, after all, she didn’t wanted this night to be over any time soon. “Would you like to continue this nice and play just for me?”

To my father

Marie: You'd do that? For me? I, thank you. You are a singer? I'm a singer as well. What's your favorite genre of music. Sorry I just there is so much I want to know. What's the name of your band. Water is good, did you ever try flavored water though, I enjoy it after a run. I like to stay in shape - i uh like to be seen.

Marie: My favorite food is cherry pie, and my favorite chocolate is dark chocolate.

Ed: Of course I would, I feel truly terrible for not being part of your life sooner. We will have all the time in the world to get to know it other, I promise you I'm not going anywhere. I like acoustic, there's nothing better than a singer with a guitar and a good lyrics.

Ed: (link of his band). This is my band, I would love to know what you think of it.

Ed: When I arrive, we can go out for some pie, we can even go for a run, but I will probably be out of breath very fast.

Ed: speaking of when I arrive.

Ed: When would you like me to go?

Marie: I don't know if my brothers are also welcoming that idea - so I'm thinking texting for now would be better. I want to know more about you though, like what it is you do for a living and what your favorite drink is and food?

Ed: I know, but even if they don't want to see me, I can make the trip just for you. Sure. hm. I'm a singer, before I met your mother I was the drummer, she was the one that game me the courage to sing and start my own band. If you have any videos of you singing, I would love to hear it. My favorite drink is water, I know, very boring. It used to be whiskey, but I have been sober for 10 years now. My favorite food is a tie between pizza and taco, and my favorite chocolate is reeses pieces. How about you? i would love to know more about you.

Marie: Hello Sir, my mom gave me your phone number and I wanted to message you saying that I am your daughter...my name is Marie Beaumont. I'm 21 years old. I like singing, I'm doing a music major in my university and well I hope for a chance to speak with you, because you are my dad.

Ed: Hi. Sorry for taking 21 years to know about you. Sure, I gave my phone number to your mom because I want you to be able to reach me, I would love to drop by, but if you prefer to do this by text is fine as well.

It wasn’t that Toulouse minded his mother stopping by, but sometimes it was a bit unexpected, and today was one of those times. When he heard the knock at his door he opened it, shocked to see her there. “Hey…” he greeted, a confused look on his face. “What’s up? What are you doing here?”

“I...” Duchess opened her mouth, not exactly sure how she should start this conversation, she offered the cookies to him like it could make the situation any better. “I was talking with Marie, and she was asking about her father, I’m sorry I don’t talk a lot about him, I hope you know you can always ask me anything.” She pointed out, reaching for the card in her pocket and also giving it to him. “I went to see him this weekend, I know that Marie wanted to get to know him, so he might come to town, but I also let it very clear that this is not about what I want or what your father want, this is about what you want, so if you want to go see him with Marie, please do, if you want to just text him, here’s his number. He’s looking forward to hearing from you, but it is your decision if you want to hear from him.” She said she would never force him to do something he didn’t want it, and she wanted him to know that it wouldn’t hurt her if he wanted to talk with his dad. “I’m sorry for not reaching out to him sooner.”

She tilted her head in confusement, how could this be her mother’s fault, though? But then her mother started to explain, and she found herself frowning all the more. “Mom that’s not your fault though, that’s the fault of the person who send the check. You only did what you felt was right.” of course she wouldn’t blame her mother for her father’s absence, if anything she was glad that her mother took the effort after all these years. “I’m not sure if I want to spend holidays with him yet…” She felt it was a bit too soon, but a text message - that she could do. Because she wanted to know him, and she wanted to fill the missing piece she had felt all these years.

Duchess shook her head and tears started rolling down her face again. “No, it is my fault, I should have tried to reach out to him sooner, I should have just burned the check and let it go, even if he did send the check I should have gone to see him and yell in his face for doing something like that, and if I had the courage  of facing him all those years ago, you wouldn’t have grown up without a father.” She couldn’t forgive herself for being the cause of Marie pain, it was because of her that she grew up thinking her father didn’t want her. “I’m so sorry...” She said, unfortunately there was no way of fixing her mistake

Of course, Marie was ready to defend her mother. She meant the world to her, as much as her grandmother meant to her. She was her everything. So when she saw her mother distressed, she was ready to open her claws and pounce. She tilted her head when her mother said that it hadn’t been Thomas, she quickly tried to think of whoever could put her in such a state, but her mother already replied that answer for her.

“My dad…” Marie was silent for a moment. He wanted to meet her - he wanted to know her. “I don’t understand, I thought he told you to take ‘care of us’…” Then why would he suddenly change his mind now, so many years later. They were twenty-one, for fuck’s sake.

“I uhm - I guess I’ll give him a call.” Marie actually did want to meet him. She wanted to see if she resembled him in a way. “A-are you okay with that, though?”

Duchess tried her best not to cry again at Marie’s words, because if she started, she wasn't sure if she would be able to stop any time soon. “That’s my fault...” She said, she hated that she was the reason to why Marie was in pain for not having a father all these years, and if Marie ended up hating her for it, it was something she would have to live with, what she wasn’t going to do it was to lie to her daughter.

“He didn’t send the check, someone else did in his name, and he never knew I was pregnant.” She told her. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I didn’t tried to contact him sooner, or yell at his face when I saw the check, if I had...” Duchess wiped some tears away. “Is all my fault.”

She bit her lower lip. “I want you to have a relationship with him,  I want you to call him, text him, spend the holidays with him if that’s what you want, you don’t have to worry about me.” It was her job to worry about Marie, and not the other way around.

“No, thank you - I - Mom?” She went over to her mother, the trace of a tear lingering. “W-Where you crying? Is something wrong?” She quickly took the tray out of her mother’s hands and placed them on the counter.

“Is it Thomas, did he do something?”

She almost hated hoe perceptive Marie was, of course she wouldn’t be able to hide her tears from her, she let out a small chuckled when Marie said Thomas name, poor Thomas, he was nothing but perfect, and she couldn’t imagine him making her cry, but Marie was ready to attack him to defend her, and that warmed her heart. “No, no. is...” She took a deep breath, and reached for the phone number in her pocket and placed it on the counter. “I went to talk with your father on the weekend, here’s his number, he’s waiting for you to reach out, he wanted to come, but I thought I shouldn’t be the one that decides that. He’s looking forward to getting to know you guys.” Duchess said.
