a character study.

oh my darling clementine is not the most typical lullaby, being so morbid as it were, but when your daughter's name is clementine, it feels fitting nonetheless.

but maybe thinking of and vocalizing your daughter's untimely death before she's even born is a bad omen. if not for her than maybe for the both of you.

the second daughter, who is supposed to be another gift to their family a handful of years after their perfect clara jane.

but christina brandt isn't satisfied to simply receive a gift. even a second gift for that matter.

she must make the absolute most of it. did she say it? her. she must make the most of her daughters. hers.

it's not a wonder where clementine's neuroses come from, if you take a close enough look at her mother. but best believe she won't let you too close.

she had plans for her girls- success- awards- beauty- marriages to men who don't have to pretend to be loaded. but such lies a wife must maintain.

there are things she wishes she could take back- of course there are. but a smart woman never admits when she's failed. she simply creates a new success.

love is control- it's guidance with an iron grip. love is pretending. it's putting on a brave and shining face every single day without breaking to pieces. or throwing your wedding ring in that bastard's face. even if it'd serve him right.

it's funny, because she's told clara jane a hundred times not to put up with a man who thinks he can do better than you. especially if he's bold enough to say it. christina just doesn't feel the same rules apply with a ring on your finger.

d-i-v-o-r-c-e is a dirtier word than any other swear she'd politely threaten to cut out of frivolous daughters' mouths.

daughters don't know any better. how was she supposed to avoid teaching them her bad habits without pushing her best ones down their throats.

the poison drips down.

clementine makes her own way to college- it's an embarrassment as well as a point of secret pride. these things are not so straightforward. a school like that hardly is an ivy. she raised her daughters to marry the kind of men who would go to an ivy. screw her for caring about class while she can't afford to fully fork over her daughter's private university tuition. she should've been able to. would've been able to.

the fact clementine is trotting around wearing small outfits doesn't bother her so much- she's a dancer- a dance teacher. she runs a successful program and she's been putting her daughters in tiny outfits for years. maybe it's more frustrating to watch her give something away without bringing her back a solo nationals trophy in these recent years.

miss new york is actually a point of pride- her daughter being miss america wouldn't be the worst thing. even if she wishes she'd had the idea first. and she likes that as a way for clementine to pay her way... an honorable way. dancing in a bikini on tiktok for some brand feels much less so.

clementine might tell her mother under the supervision of their well paid therapist that her mother can't criticize how she makes her money when she's paying her own bills... consider that you're paying for Her instead of your daughter's college.

christina would argue that she just wants the absolute best for her daughters. a damaged reputation is far from that.

clementine would want her to see it's not clementine's own reputation she's worried about. it's hers.

and frankly- she should be a whole lot more worried about the shareholders coming out and breaking their nda's than what clementine does on the internet.

or maybe worried about who clara jane's been involved with lately. but that's not clementine's secret to tell.
