very old and slightly more recent sona refs the “species” is sorta a biological tank, meant for amphibious hunting in high pressure environments. Due to both an exoskeleton and endoskeleton, they are very dense and will sink despite their high body fat content, which is mainly used to just keep them warm and store energy for hibernations. the species hunts by simply walking into a deep lake or other large body of water and snagging fish there where swifter predators would have trouble with the darkness and pressure. Their eyes are comprised of two primary eyes under each lens-like armored dome, with a cluster of small simple eyes surrounding, and a lid on top of the lens. eye colors vary but are hard to make out under the dark lens cover. Antenna and eyes are the primary sensory organs underwater, while ears will fold closed and the nose becomes used for filtering water through gills. out of water, antennae take a few seconds to dry, and gills will lock up to keep moisture in, allowing for the use of the nose and a keen sense of smell. there is a minor feeling of disorientation when emerging or entering water as the antenna get used to the change in environment, somewhat akin to eyes adjusting upon walking into a dark room on a sunny day or walking into the sunlight from a dark room.
the bit at the bottom of the second image shows what the sona would look like with no plumage/hair present on the exoskeleton
EDIT: i think i like the body of the first draw with the face and tail of the second the face isnt as moth-y on the second, but i like the eye placement better
