Hmmm for me, maybe, if I had to write a LoV fic where Shigaraki is in character in that he isn’t emotionally attached to the League and do consider them tools, yet he’s not like super cruel and overly callous and it is sort of like a found family - then I would portray him as just very possessive.

They’re pawns but they’re his pawns, he’s not gonna let anyone touch them, not the heroes or other villains. He’s not gonna let them die, he’s not gonna kill them over petty things, he’s not gonna break them beyond repair because that’s still losing them. He doesn’t ‘care’ about them nor does he like them, but they belong to him and everyone will have to face him first.

It’s not nice, comfy feelings or relationships, but it’s a sort of concern and protectiveness. It’s as close as he can get to being a ‘friend’.

Tbh it’s obvious he understands the world through board mental scripts he got from video games and media, and not just sorta thoughtlessly using gamer slang but generalizing and applying and using it as a base and adapting and building upon it for irl. In this situation, you’re to do this, take this dialogue option; with this character, you’re to give them this, bond with like this to gain their allyship. Adapt this trait and personality for this. He’s the main character, this is his adventure, doesn’t matter if he’s a Villain/Bad Guy, it still works the same. Just with more killing and less lawful good crap, and also it’s real life and the consequence are permanent esp now that AFO isn’t here to help.

(I kinda compare it to how I play fire emblem lol. I have a bunch of units, they’re fun enough but most I don’t care for much, if I have to I’ll kill one of them to finish a level. But!! I hate doing that, I hate losing a unit, it hurts my pride, so I gotta restart the whole level just so I can get it right, I can win without sacrificing any of them.

this single panel, without having to explain what he means by ‘tinkering’, creeps me out more than anything else depicted in the chapter to be honest. 

the ruthlessness, the absolute lack of human empathy on both sides… which is made even more horrifying by the fact that AFO does understand the emotions that drive people (he uses them to manipolate after all). Ujiko / Tsubasa doesn’t seem to even understand human emotions (as proved by his dialogue with Dabi, and how inappropriate for the context his excited remarks on how perfect his creations are). Like, he doesn’t even see people as people. Just toys to experiment with. But Afo… Afo knows exactly what Tenko is going through. He knows perfectly well the emotional impact of making him see the disembodied hands of his family. How it will awaken the suppressed memories of his trauma that he’d tried his best to remove entirely from himself. And he doesn’t care at all. He wants Shigaraki to relive all that horror. He wants him to be twisted by that pain, to be starved by affection, to develop an unhealthy attachment to the only provider he has left of that emotional stability, which just so happens to be him, since afo basically brought Shig to a prison masked as a safe heaven and locked him there for the rest of his life. 

Plus, there’s the implication that if Shigaraki’s grooming didn’t turn out to be something manageable and useful to cater to afo’s needs, then all he’d have to do was allow Ujiko/Tsubasa to ‘tinker’ with him…
