Welp, that didn’t last long. Okay, here we go again. Still probably not going to post often but it is what it is.
Hi I’m Sirius. I’m catholic, and queer. I’ve been in a very happy loving relationship for just over two years now. I love DnD , photography, music, reading, and journaling. I still don’t know what I want this blog to be so I guess we are going to find out together. Right now a lot of it is going to be about my faith, and maybe school because that’s just the chapter of life that I’m in right now. I also have DID so that will likely come up as well.
Here’s a bit of my faith journey, shortened… as well as I could -it’s still really long (TW: homophobia, mental health, neglect) :
So I was born and raised in the same city I still live in today, going to the same Catholic Church my whole life from the time I was born till about 21 years old. I received all my sacraments there, grew up in faith formation classes, and VBS, and the children choir. Being an only child with emotionally distant parents being taught how to be an adult before being allowed to be a child meant church was home to me. I got to be my age and hang out with friends. I went to mass and understood it to the level of a child, be nice to others, Jesus loves you, ect.
Then, when I was starting middle school I realized I was queer. And with that learned that the church, the south, and conservatives don’t really like that. So I started to distance myself from my family and my church because I knew they wouldn’t accept me and I wanted to minimize the pain when I finally came out. I still participated in church and was probably one of the most active kids in the parish just because I wanted an excuse to hang out with friends and get out of the house. But I didn’t really have my own personal faith for a few years.
When I reached High school not much had changed, except for the fact that I was finally old enough to go on the church’s high school mission trip over the summer. I might not have had a lot of faith but I still loved helping the community and being able to makes peoples day better. So the summer after freshman year I went on the mission trip. And while I was there I had a life changing experience during adoration that flung me head first back into my faith.
For the rest of high school and the start of college I was doing as much as I could in my church and really paying attention to my faith for the first time. Still at the same church I’d grown up at a lot of my faith was rooted in community. In the comfort of familiar surroundings and people. I didn’t have much of a personal relationship with God but I tried here and there, with not much sticking other than Adoration and Music. I was doing so much, looking back now I was very much a Martha doing everything I can for the church and the dioceses at my age.
Then, a bit over two years ago I meet my amazing boyfriend. He is absolutely wonderful and one of the best things to ever happen to me. Unfortunately, I had told someone I thought I could trust with the information that we had started dating. They went and told one of the leaders of the church. I then had a closed door conversation with them where they gave me an ultimatum, either break up with my boyfriend, or never volunteer and help out at church again. It sucked the breath out of me. As we were talking a knew in my heart that I wasn’t meant to leave my boyfriend. So I did what I never thought I could do, and walked out of my Home, my church, not knowing if I would ever come back.
I still loved that church and didn’t hold anything against any of the priests or people there other than the leader who I had that conversation with. I knew they didn’t tell anyone who worked with them of that conversation because I continued to get emails asking for my help with different events that I would in the past. So to the rest of the church I just disappeared one day.
Surprising to probably no one, I struggled with my faith for a long time after that. I knew I wasn’t done with my faith, but I remember praying to God, to watch over me and to wait. That I wasn’t leaving his path but sitting down and taking a break for a while. I knew I would come back I was just so hurt and tired and everything about my faith was triggering so I didn’t know when I would come back, but I needed time to heal.
I tried about a year ago to go back to church, to the one I had missed since the day I walked out of its doors. I thought I was ready, I had started working on my personal faith and relationship with God again. I was hesitant but excited to be back and just in time for Lent. So I went to daily mass and half way through I saw the leader who kicked me out. I immediately started to have a panic attack and realized that as long as I was planning on going to that church, and they still worked there I wouldn’t be able to truly enjoy mass. I would always be on edge and that’s not what God wants, he wants peace.
It wasn’t till about 8 months later (around 4 months ago) that I found another church in a different diocese to go to. I love it there, they have nearly perpetual Adoration and going there brought me so much peace. This church is an hour away from where I live so I don’t get to go often which sucks but I go when I can. I have been working on my personal faith and have committed to God that I am ready to stand back up and continue to follow on his path. That I will probably have to start slowly but I only want to go where He leads me.
And the best and recent part of my story is still unfolding. For the first time in many months I checked my home parish’s website and the leader who kicked me out seems to no longer work for the church. They are no longer on any of the staff pages, and while I’ve been doing livestream daily masses the past few days I haven’t seen them. So soon I will try to go to daily mass in person, and if I can confirm that they are no longer regularly attending then I will be able to go back Home with no fear. Which will be amazing, as it is much much closer to my house than the hour drive to the new church.
Anyway, pray for me as I continue to find sure footing in my path with God. And for my ability to return to my Home parish without any fear or anxiety.
Mary, Mother of Mercy, Pray for us.
