Whatever, man, solar eclipses aren’t nearly as cool as lunar eclipses. A lunar eclipse is at NIGHT and the MOON turns BLOOD RED and you don’t need dumb glasses to watch it. It’s goth as hell. Fuck the sun.

All that AU stuff has me thinking about just how I want to interpret Nightmare Moon / the parasite, especially because across canon material it’s somewhat subjective, and also open to interpretation. I like both major variants: the parasite, and luna’s worst emotions manifest.

favourite thing about nightmare moon? how different it can be interpreted.
in the IDW storyline, it is an actual creature possessing someone. But at the same time, there’s also a comic where, although it’s a parody-ish plot, they portray it very clearly as a “Luna becomes the worst version of herself” ( 01, 02 ).
And the show? Pretty ambiguous, but I’d heavily lean towards the latter, even though we also see her use fake fangs when she transforms into NMM during Nightmare Night. In the comics, she does not need them.
Canon itself is somewhat loose / inconsistent on what Nightmare Moon truly is, beyond the result of Luna’s emotions, and that opens up so many variations. My default is the parasitic storyline, simply bcs I like to explore that creature itself, but I also really love the idea of Luna growing into that “ascended” state over time as she comes to accept these feelings as part of herself, instead of fighting them, unlocking NMM’s true potential.
Make it a force of good!! Like in the thread I’ve started with that wonderful applejack: a Nightmare moon that is born out of love, not jealousy !! Luna finally coming to peace with the turmoil within herself !!!
AN INHERENTLY BENEVOLENT NIGHTMARE MOON !! I HAVE SO MANY IDEAS !!
ONE LAST THOUGHT: in WOTE, Luna is actively fighting against Nightmare Moon, taking any chance to appear before her : dreams, reflections, voices on the wind. Before, she was a little foal consumed by emotions, and although it is a very similar case, Luna has grown. She knows not to despair. She knows to fight : for her friends, for her sister.
But now consider: Celestia reaching out as well. This phantom of a foe it thought vanquished. But no. First the little sister prevents it from permanently ending the solar queen, now both of them are haunting this self-appointed empress, fighting back against its grasp from beyond the physical world.
Because the sisters will always fight for Equestria. And they will always fight for one another. Nightmare Moon looks in the mirror, and she sees the alicorn sisters staring her down, ever present, never relenting.

( i only wanted to protect them ) o’ hubris — stricken goddess, this is your story : descend into darkness time and again. what have you done this time ?
regardless of verse / plotline : when Nightmare Moon strikes down Celestia and ushers in her victory, the nocturne empress weeps. No matter how deeply ingrained into Luna’s very being this parasite has become, there sits a lonely, little sister beneath the darkness who struck down the pony she loved most.
Luna’s love for Celestia is so great, it will shatter any and all bonds to allow for grief to surface. To wail and cry for hours upon hours for what she lost. No eldritch abomination can take this from her.

re: three empresses once more
Nightmare Moon putting a spell on the castle or wherever the battlefield was ( or through ponies’ dreams, even ), that forges a false scenario into their head. So now those who witnessed the confrontation think it was Daybreaker.
That the public story is that Luna essentially transcended into Nightmare Moon in response to Celestia turning into Daybreaker. The world, although wary, thinks she is still their benevolent ruler of the night, completely in control of the power she called upon. Nightmare Moon is playing nice, using Daybreaker as scapegoat while she grows her influence throughout Equestria, further influencing everyone through their dreams.
This also opens up the possibility for a rebellion in the shadows, from those that left before the spell hit them. They’re trying to spread the truth, but are marked heretics and hunted. And things just… overall get more unfriendly as a whole, which only works in NMM’s favor. Especially with that Kirin Empress closing in.
When going with the “equestria thinks nightmare moon is their beloved princess” approach, Sunset could easily be the one to notice something is up, especially feeling the spellwork, and become the one to rally the rebels and be their leader.
re: the war of the three empresses
consider: the nightmare parasite returns and goes for either Celestia or Twilight, and in an attempt to save her, Luna takes it into herself once more. Except she’s too late and it kills its previous host during the change, and whoever is left looses their battle with Nightmare Moon.
Depending on the timeline, the Elements of Harmony may not be there to bind her this time, and the parasite has learned from its previous mistakes.
