Tarsa couldnât help the smile that broke out on his face as he watched their two little ones roll around on the carpet, squeaking. New, harder scales covered all their bodies, shining as their twins scuttled around on all forms in their new dragon forms.
âArenât they just beautiful, Elealeth?â He knelt down, and the twins rushed into their fatherâs lap, squirming over each other to get a better spot. âTheir first time in their dragon formsâŠâ Perhaps she might not get it entirely, as most humans wouldnât know transforming as an experience to begin with, but he couldnât help himself. His own children. Proper little dragons.
Tarsaâs eyes slit narrower in turn and he rubbed his hand along his daughterâs back while she relaxed against him. She was obviously content to be in her fatherâs arms.
âThreatening can be good, if they want to keep danger away. I wouldnât let them risk being discovered if I could help it, though. I just want whatâs best for them. Itâs not a safe world out there for young dragons. Not in this day and age,â he groused stubbornly. He severely doubted what a bunch of modern humans, even protective ones, could do against a genuine threat. Guardians of children or not. âNot forever. Just until I think theyâre ready.â He paused with his hand on Sabraelâs back, giving his mate a confused and slightly annoyed look. âItâs not âgoodâ for me to want to protect our children?â
âThey will attract danger if they appear threatening to the human parents whose young also go there. You know this. You donât go breathing fire on campus when you teach.â He wasnât thinking straight, obviously in blind protective parent mode.
âNo, its not âgoodâ when you get so protective your child gets kept away from the world for their own âprotectionâ. You forget Iâve been through that first hand. Youâve seen my dad.â
âThat is because itâs logical and I have had thousands of years practice in hiding in plain sight. They are but children and, while I can teach them and use magic to attempt to hide their other physical inheritances all I like, I cannot get rid of them completely.â It was vaguely upsetting that she kept arguing this, he just wanted what he thoughy was best for them. âFor humans, yes, and your father took it too far and too long, I will agree. But our children are still children, they *need* protection while theyâre still young. Itâs how my mother brought me up when I was small.â He hadnât gone out much when he was younger, his early years took place majority in the family home until he was at least the human equivalent of 8.
âOur children are half human. You cannot simply ignore that part of their heritage. Which is why i think we need a proper middle ground. A school you can set up proper wards around, and has quick access via magic set up so you can check at any time to be sure they are safe. There are ways to protect them without holeing them off from the world entirely.â
He let a low, uneasy growl rumble in his chest as he considered her words. No matter how he trusted his mate, it still made him uneasy. "And what sort of school do you think I would be able to do that in? Even if I could sneak in and set up magic while others are away, which I could, something strong would need significant work. Especially if you want to send them off so soon. I wouldn't feel safe sending them off unless I knew I could do it all properly first."
