Popeye the Sailor Man was real!
Popeye’s real name was Frank “Rocky” Fiegel. Born in 1868 in Poland, he was a retired sailor who worked as a janitor/bouncer in Wiebusch’s tavern in the city of Chester, Illinois, to clean and help maintain order. He had a reputation to always be involved in fights, rumored to be the reason he had a deformed eye, thus the nickname “Pop-eye”. He always smoked a pipe, and spoke with only one side of his mouth as he gripped it with his clenched teeth. He loved to be around children. There is no verifiable accounting of his adventures which he boasted about, along with exploits of his physical strength, but he often bragged that he’d never lost a fight.
The author of Popeye, Elzie Crisler Segar, born in Chester, met Frank when he was a young man, and regularly listened to his stories. Years later, he honored Frank with the character of Popeye the Sailor Man.
A real-life Olive Oil also existed. She was Dora Paskel, owner of a grocery store in Chester. She was described to dress just like Olive Oil.
Segar kept in touch with Frank and regularly helped him with money. Frank, like Popeye, was said to carry some inherent features like courage, chivalry and virility. No word on whether he had to use those attributes to defend the virtue of Ms. Paskel from any real-life Blutos or Brutuses.
