Caroline and Dwight from Poldark ( again)
Iâm ombradellaluna on Instagram, Redbubble and Society6!
Hiiiiii! I love your writing! I was wondering, are you currently working on any Poldark related things?
Hi! Aw thank you thatâs so nice! đ unfortunately Iâm not working on anything big atm, I just donât really have the inspiration. I wrote this little ficlet the other day though, itâs set post Betwixt & Between, but could also work as a one shot I guess!

âIt really seems like so much space after only using our room for so long,â said Caroline in a tone of wonder as she carried a bouquet of fresh flowers to the windowsill.
She then bent over slightly to look for the vase in the luggage box, but was halted by her husbandâs hand on her shoulder.
âCareful, now,â Dwight warned, laughing slightly though with an edge of seriousness to his tone. âIf you go down there weâll never get you back up again.â
Caroline chuckled and sighed heavily. âUgh, I know. I am starting to resemble some kind of revolting beached animal at this point, arenât I?â She put two hands on either side of her growing bump.
Dwight grinned and interlocked their fingers. âI do love whales, though.â
âWho said anything about whales?â Caroline demanded, feigning deep offence.
Dwight kissed her cheek and fetched the vase she had been looking for. He took the flowers from her hand and placed them in the painted ornament, making a note to fill it with water before making another trip to the back room.
It seemed almost entirely impossible that a year ago he had been on the front lines of The Great War, and now he was in his home - which he shared with his wife and her elderly uncle - and he and Caroline were expecting their first child together. Sometimes it felt as though he was living in the loveliest dream.
Seeing that her husband had become rather lost in thought, and concerned the thought mightnât be a good one, she deflected: âTruly, though, I donât know how you can bear to look at me.â
Snapped from his trance, Dwight closed the small distance between them and put his hands on either side of her face. He was smiling as he said: âmmm, youâre right. Perhaps I deserve a medal of some sorts.â He kissed her.
âI should think you have enough of those,â Caroline teased between kisses. âBut I suppose the thought of ever making love to me again is simply unbearable.â
Dwight unbuttoned the first two buttons of her blouse and kissed the place where each button had been. âI cannot even begin to explain how dreadful the thought is,â he murmured against her skin.
She smiled as she slid his braces from his shoulders and coaxed him onto the vintage chaise-lounge in their little sitting room in the east wing of Killewarren. âHave you begun to think about other women?â Caroline joked as Dwight kissed along her neck.
The doctor hissed and reclined momentarily to look at her. âOoh, Iâm sorry. Now that I cannot joke about. There could never be anyone for me but you, Caroline.â
âGood heavens, how sweet. And just when my nausea was beginning to subside.â
They both laughed loudly, which uncle Ray heard in a faint echo from the parlour downstairs and smiled from behind his novel. âItâs awfully nice when things work out much better than one could ever imagine, isnât it, Horace?â Ray asked the snoring pug curled beneath his arm.
Horace snuffled in reluctant agreement at the statement, before grumbling indignantly at having been woken and preceding to fall immediately back to sleep. And so everyone in Killewarrenâs household was content once more.

âDwight found he was in a playful mood. He wasnât certain why such a change had come over his disposition this past month, perhaps it was that he and Caroline had grown close again, had opened to each other again, since Sarah. Whatever the true reason, he felt lighter - and was grateful for it.â
Caroline and Sarah Enys, a redrawing on tablet.
Oh man, this family still breaks my heart.
I don't know if anyone is still here but if so, I say to you...
hi.
ââWhat allurement can a woman hope to have for a man who has already examined her tonsils and her teeth and has counted her ribs in the harsh light of day?â
Dwight took a gulp of wine. âWell, if you want to know that, let me tell you! You have every possible allurement for me. I love you and am fascinated by everything you do, and no amount of medical attention, either on you or on myself, will ever cure me of that!ââ

Caroline had been home from London scarcely three days, and so was not the least bit amused to find her husbandâs side of the bed cooling rapidly. She thrust on her robe over her nightgown and stepped out into the moonlit corridor, in search of some answers. She was soon informed by a weary Bone - who she ordered to bed - that Dr Enys had been called to the Blakeâs home not twenty minutes ago, as Mrs Blake was in difficulty with birthing her child.
âOh,â was all Caroline had said, a queer mingled sense of pity and resentment coursing through her.
She had returned to bed quite soon after, but had failed in her quest to sleep, finding her mind preoccupied with worries of her husband, concern for the newborn babe, and an ache for the beloved creature who slept in the churchyard beyond the hill.
âI should think it will be all right now," Dr Enys told Mrs James Blake as he packed his bag. He nodded to James himself, who had alternated between haunting the creaking floorboards downstairs and hovering round his wife's bedside all night. He was now cuddling his baby daughter with ecstatic paternal joy. Dwight looked away quickly and bid them goodbye.
Dawn was breaking across the khaki and violet moorland as he trudged home. The hand carrying his medical bag was clenched painfully around the smooth wooden handle and his eyes had slipped half-shut to the world. He was tired. Young Miss Blake had been the first baby he'd delivered since⊠well. Since.
When he reached the house he was surprised to see Caroline already up and about. He frowned slightly at her as he met her in the parlour.
She took one look at him, the dark smudges against his pale tired face, the dejected curve of his shoulders, the forlorn dip of his mouth, and knew. She knew precisely what- who he had been thinking of. She then took his hands in hers and looked up at him, her blue eyes shining.
He could see the shadow of pain in them still - the pain which must be clear in his own here and now - and he swallowed with some difficulty.
âDwightâ dearest Dwight â I'm sorry," she said in a quiet, quivering voice. Dwight took an automatic step forward, opening his mouth to argue, to say that there was nothing for her to be sorry about, but Caroline laid a finger on his lips, her expression sad. "I forgot â do you know, Dwight - I'm so sorry - but I believe forgot for a time that Sarah was ours, not just mine⊠oh, my love, how wretched you must feel after the night.â
He grasped her arms with desperate force, but she merely leant into the embrace, murmuring soft words of solace that he vaguely recognised as his own to her. His eyes burnt and this time he allowed the tears to fall freely in her presence, pressing his face into her robed shoulder.
And outside, the dawn was breaking over the cliffs, bringing with it the promise of a new day.

ââI donât really believe calculation or deep perception entered into it with either of us, Caroline. We saw each other. And when weâd done that weâd eyes for no one else.ââ
