Perspective: Visitors or guests?
A visitor is someone who is not going to be around very long and with probably no plans to return- just a quick drop-by sort of interaction. A guest, on the other hand, is a person you have invited and for whom you have prepared. You treat them differently and they sense it. Make sure every new face in your small group is treated as a guest and not as a visitor.
Appearances
Have someone outside of your class, even better-outside of your church, come in to your classroom to point out things you don't even notice any more; clutter, out of date posters and announcements, or anything else that would be a distraction to a guest. Then deal with it on the spot.
Teaching Tip
The one who talks the most learns the most. Do whatever you can to get your class members engaged and talking.
Shepherding Tip
Prayers can be brief but pray for all your class members in a given week. And on a regular basis, send text messages to people simply saying, "Praying for you this morning." The sheep need to know that they are on the shepherd's mind and heart and in his prayers. #relationships
Leadership Tip
Change you focus from calling it a "class roster" or "attendance roll;" instead, use it as a "ministry list." The former puts focus on attendance for which class members are solely responsible. The latter puts responsibility on everyone with you, as teacher, being primary as giving ministry to each other. Subtle shift with a huge difference.
Teaching Tip
In the preparation process, as you are teaching the "what" or actual content, always seek to help your students find the "so what?" or what difference does the biblical truth make in my life personally. Then let them leave with the "now what?" issue to deal with; that is, what do I do with the challenge presented to me from God's word?
Ministry Tip
Don't assume that the teacher should "do the ministry" for the class. As shepherd, ultimately responsible-yes! He/she must minister but Care Group leaders who are responsible for 4-6 fellow class members are the key to consistent ministry and heathy class building.
WHERE people serve is not as important as the fact THAT they serve.
Don’t Wait!
Often there is a desire to start class "when everybody gets here." That gives chronic late comers permission and encouragement to arrive even later. Think of the impact on a guest who gets there on time but has to wait 10, 15, or 20 minutes with a lot of small talk. Most likely, it will be their last time.
An unseen effect is that parents with children who arrive late create all sorts of issues in preschool and elementary classes-their kids either miss the foundation of the lesson or a teacher has to spend one-on-one time catching up the late arriver. Don't encourage late arrival; set a time and stick to it.
