Did you know that Beaver swest had the taste of vanilla?
I don't wanna know how we know that.
Because that's how we get fake vanilla flavor. It's derived from beaver glands, primarily the anal glands.
Nooooooooo not the vanillin
Modern vanillin is either synthesized in a lab or, more rarely, sourced from wood pulp. We haven't sourced vanillin (technically castoreum) from beavers since like the 1920s.
Why don't we use it? Partially because it's gross. Mostly because it's expensive.
Ah, thank you for the correction! Now I feel better about eating artificial vanilla.
I'm just baffled that apparently harvesting vanilla from plants is hard enough that people tried getting it from the asshole of a wild animal and then had to give up. Just get it from the fucking flower then??? If my choices were high maintenance plant vs harvesting goo from the ass of something that can chew through solid wood with it's teeth I'd stick with the high maintenance plant, but maybe that's just me??
you are SEVERELY underestimating how high-maintenance the plant is! it's not the harvesting, it's the pollination.
vanilla flowers can only physically be pollinated by one insect, the melipona bee, which has a fairly limited range, and they cannot self-pollinate. the flowers also bloom EXTREMELY briefly. because of this, the only way to meet commercial demand for vanilla is for humans to constantly monitor every bud until it blooms and then hand-pollinate each flower. this pollination is highly time-sensitive and can fail. imagine how expensive apples would be if humans had to hand-pollinate every single fruit!

i think the key difference between george lucas’s star wars and disney’s star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because that’s how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation can’t have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when you’re a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you can’t take sides. you can’t decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.
I have been looking for this post for years after I came across it and it’s finally here and I need to reblog this because it is absolutely and entirely accurate.
#as I always say: lucas was making a samurai film and a ww2 flying ace film and a western film and adding laser swords#because he fundamentally LIKED samurai films and dambusters films and westerns and 40’s adventure serials#but disney are making a ‘star wars film’ and adding nothing because it already had laser swords and they have nothing else to say#xerox of a xerox baybeeeee (via harrietvane)
I'm sorry WHAT
'lazy people don't feel guilty about not doing anything' is insane to me and I have been trying to make my brain believe it for a long time, it shocked me to my core when I first heard it
An important corollary to "if you were faking your mental illness, you could stop whenever you wanted."
