On a recent trip to the southwest, I came across this little guy and a number of his compatriots. They each had a colorful and unique look, almost like miniature dragons. It took some patience and inching along to get close enough for the shot. Thanks for looking!

"The Merced River"

The Merced River as it makes its way through Yosemite Valley. "The Merced River (pronounced mer-SED), in the central part of the U.S. state of California, is a 145-mile (233 km)-long tributary of the San Joaquin River flowing from the Sierra Nevada into the Central Valley. It is most well known for its swift and steep course through the southern part of Yosemite National Park, and the world-famous Yosemite Valley. "El Capitan"

The iconic El Capitan as seen along the Merced River. "The formation was named "El Capitan" by the Mariposa Battalion when it explored the valley in 1851. El Capitán ("the captain", "the chief") was taken to be a loose Spanish translation of the local Native American name for the cliff, variously transcribed as "To-to-kon oo-lah" or "To-tock-ah-noo-lah". It is unclear if the Native American name referred to a specific Tribal chief, or simply meant "the chief" or "rock chief". In modern times, the formation's name is often contracted to "El Cap", especially among rock climbers and BASE jumpers." wiki Thanks for looking!

"Sierra Nevada Sunrise"

I wanted to arrive at Glacier Point in time for sunrise which is why I started my hike along the Four Mile Trail at 12:30am. That allowed me to snag a couple of the previous posts along the way, and still have plenty of time to setup for this sunrise. One of the more memorable (given the conditions and effort) sunrises I've witnessed, with the sun striking the backside of Half Dome. Thanks for looking!

"Kyoto Cherries"

I am going to miss out on shooting the Cherry Blossoms this year, so I thought I'd visit one from last year that I didn't post. This is the view from the famous Kiyomizu-dera Buddhist Temple in Kyoto, Japan. This was the shot I had in mind when we traveled to the other side of the world in search of the Cherry Blossoms, and I was excited it paid off. The temple grounds take on an enchanted atmosphere as the surrounding gardens are lit from below. The Kyoto Tower and skyline can be seen on the horizon. Thanks for looking!

"Upper Yosemite Falls"

One of my favorites from the trip, this is an early morning view of Upper Yosemite Falls. I particularly liked how the wind was pulling wisps of the waterfall away from the rock face. Have a great weekend and thanks for looking!

"Oh Modesto"

Or at least I think that's the glow of Modesto, CA on the horizon. I do know the little orange light in the mountainside is the tunnel coming into the valley. This is the view of Yosemite Valley looking back west as seen along the Four Mile Trail. I started this trek at 1230 am. Yeah, I was a little off in the head on this trip, but it was worth it. "Yosemite Falls"

The color on this morning was fleeting, and though short lived, I thought the pink hues went nicely with the snow capped mountains. From this vantage on the other side of the valley, you can see the full span of both Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls. This location took some getting to, but we'll get to that in a future post. If you don't move your eyes around the frame, you might miss the first light hitting El Capitan. Bridalveil Fall can be seen along the right hand side. It's easy to see why this view is so popular. Have a great weekend and thanks for looking!

"Below Vernal Fall"

The view as seen below Vernal Fall. This took a little getting to, but I couldn't pass it up. As for the processing, I didn't like the distraction of the brush along the sides. I started to darken it, then went b&w, and this is where I ended up. It was on this and other hikes that I started to gain a better appreciation for the park. Thanks for looking!

"Tunnel View at Night"

The (daytime) conditions in Yosemite weren't very conducive for landscape photography, so I turned to a lot of clear sky nighttime photography. One benefit of this was it allowed me to stay on east coast time the entire trip, as I was waking up by 3am if not earlier. This is the classic Tunnel View with a nighttime twist. I thought the headlights of the vehicle down in the valley added to the shot, as well as hints of the Milky Way. Have a great weekend and thanks for looking!
