Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship
Dyan Gabriela N. Rosauro & Desson PilapilÂ
The relationship between media and government is important in a growing nation. They have a subtle impact to the public. Undeniably, government relies on media to communicate with the citizens. Ensuring that the public receives the real scoop information that shapes them to make thoughtful decisions and political views. Media, however, serves as the eyes and ears of the public. It has several essential purposes in a democratic society such as holding the government accountable to the people, broadcasting issues that need public attention, educating people, and, to inform several issues. Their primary purpose is to educate and inform the public. Media has an important role in influencing political discussions. It acts as watchdogs checking government actions. Additionally, it has the capability to create opportunities for the voices to be heard. The existence of free, balance, and responsible press foster transparency in a democratic government. With all of that being said, it is clear that without a strong and good relationship between media and government, it greatly impacts the society.
The pressâ role in strengthening democracy is critical. The true essence of media is to insure transparency without biases. Earlier this year, a giant media company was shut down. It is said to be because of the governmentâs inner grudges towards them. In line with that, even before this year, a lot of journalists have been killed in connection to their profession. A free press matters all the time. Freedom of the press is the right to report and circulate news without censorship from the government. Government should not meddle in any opinion given by the people because their actions shown to the public speaks a lot of volume. The press freedom shouldnât be oppressed. By the silencing of a media company, we can already attest that the government and the media in the Philippines have no good relationship. Closing down one media company and choosing what company to operate is barely not a freedom to all. Just because of voices, it is that easy to cease. The government and media should work hand in hand to provide relevant notions in our society and eradicate ignorance on political discourses. Silencing people because of their sentiments will never be right. Everyone has the right to speak and voice out their opinions âNo democracy is complete without access to transparent and reliable information.â
