CERN’s Infrastructure Services Manager Tim Bell gave an interesting session of his institution’s experiences moving to OpenStack, which he characterizes as a “cultural and technology transformation.”

The "Human Brain Project" will create the world's largest experimental facility for developing the most detailed model of the brain, for studying how the human brain works and ultimately to develop personalised treatment of neurological and related diseases. This research lays the scientific and technical foundations for medical progress that has the potential to will dramatically improve the quality of life for millions of Europeans.
The national labs at Oak Ridge (ORNL), Argonne (ANL) and Lawrence Livermore (LLNL) are banding together for their next refresh of supercomputers. In late 2016 or early 2017, all three Department of Energy (DOE) centers are looking to deploy their first 100-plus petaflop systems, which will serve as precursors to their exascale machine further down the line. The labs will issue a request for proposal (RFP) later this year with the goal of awarding the work to two prime subcontractors.

There's no escaping the fact that the Human Brain Project, with its billion-dollar plan to recreate the human mind inside a supercomputer, sounds like a science fiction nightmare.
But those involved hope their ambitious goal of simulating the tangle of neurons and synapses that power our thought processes could offer solutions to tackling conditions such as depression, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's.
Next month, one of the world's fastest supercomputers will run the largest, most complex universe simulation ever attempted.
Sequoia, the most powerful supercomputer (for now) and a 2012 PM Breakthrough Award winner, was built to model nuclear weapons explosions. But before the machine goes fully classified, scientists used its incredible power to build a simulation of the human heat that looks down to the cellular level and predicts how a heart would respond to particular drugs.
Sequoia is currently capable of 16.32 petaflops—that's more than 16 quadrillion calculations a second—55 percent faster than Japan's K Computer, which is ranked No. 2, and more than five times faster than China's Tianhe-1A, which surprised the world by taking the top spot in 2010. Sequoia's processing power is roughly equivalent to that of 2 million laptops.Â
