“Nice to meet you too! I’m Erica Lee. So who is it that you know here?”

“Yeah point slope is one of the things you should remember but If your lucky it might be in the directions on the quiz” Jake noticed her close proximity when her erica-esque sent met his nose. He looked at her from the corner of his eye before focusing on her pencil to see if she understood the concept
“Great.” Erica sighed. She continued to try to work through the question, thinking she was doing pretty well. “So... the y-intercept is... negative five? Right? Please tell me I did that correctly.” She looked at Jake expectantly, hoping that she was getting that first concept.
esc-kate:
“Are you free after school I’m going to the mall and need someone with style to help me pick up some cute outfits for fall”
“Kate, you know I have an insane amount of homework to figure out.”
“Wait, sorry, backtrack, I zoned out for a second.”

“Since the given is slope and a point that’s not the y intercept you’re going to use point slope formula which is y-y1 = m(x-x1) you plug in slope for m and the point for x1 and y1” Jake continued to explain. He offered her a pencil so she could follow along on paper.
Erica narrowed her eyes, trying to follow along. “Wait, do I need to remember the.. slope-point formula?” She asked, stopping him before she got more confused. She adjusted her position on the bed, as the angle she was trying to bend her body to just wasn’t working for her. Ending up with her shoulder practically touching Jakes, she took the pencil and tapped the eraser end on the book, trying to work it out in her head.

Jake scanned the pages she had for homework, noticing her eyes on him he looked at her with a small smile “so it’s pretty simple just a lot of steps and no problem will take less than a third of a page to work out. So the problem is asking for the slope, y, and x intercepts by only giving you the slope and one point that isn’t the y intercept.” He tried talking slower than usual so she could pick up the math vocabulary. “Do you understand everything so far?”
When Jake looked up at her, Erica averted her eyes back to the pages. She listened carefully, trying to block out the thoughts from the bonfire. “I... think so?” She said, narrowing her eyes at the page. She knew what everything meant, vocabulary wise, but as for how she was supposed to go about solving it-- she had no clue.

Yeah, it’s just difficult to explain. And as for being new, yeah, I am. I just moved in with a friend here not that long ago.
Since you’re new, I wont pry. What’s your name, new girl?

“Ye-yeah” Jake stuttered when they separated the hug not as awkward as previously thought. He walked further into his living room and off to the side where the stairs were. He jogged up them and waited for Erica before walking into his room. “Mi casa es su casa” he said walking over to his bed and sitting. “Do you have any homework or do I need to print out one of my worksheets?”
Erica followed Jake into his house, jogging up the stairs with him and entering the impeccable bedroom. “Thanks.” She said, glancing around for a place to sit that wasn’t the bed. “Uh...” She said, still trying to pick a place to sit, “I have some homework. Page seventy to seventy two, if I’m correct. Odd numbers.” Erica settled on sitting down next to Jake on the bed, and opened her book up between them. “Yeah, right here.” She said, flipping open to the pages. She looked up at Jake, the distance between them closer than she thought.
Erica’s jaw dropped slightly, surprised at his retort. She was going to say something back, but decided against it, knowing that he was clearly the type to try to get people angry. She just listened while he gave his opinion on her party. “A complete waste of time is what some of us need. No one said you had to go.” She said, looking back at her phone, not making any move to leave.
Riley’s grin widened further at Erica’s reaction to his words, and he sat forward bit. “Well, if you all did something useful with yourselves, you certainly would be of more importance to society, but it looks like you’ll be nothing but spoiled brats for now,” he said, shrugging as he sat back. Riley watched her go back to his phone and frowned when she didn’t move. He bit the inside of his cheek and went back to his sketchpad, starting a new drawing.
Erica, despite looking at her phone, was still listening to everything Riley was saying, and rolled her eyes when he finished. That wasn’t the first time she’d been called a spoiled brat, so she wasn’t going to start letting it affect her now. But, she still had some things to say. “You don’t know any of us,” she said, narrowing her eyes at him. “And you sure as hell don’t know what we’re doing with our lives outside of the partying.”

The second Jake opened the door, Erica put on a huge grin and exclaimed an overly enthusiastic, “Hey!”, right back at him. Any sign of her previous uncertainty about coming over was suddenly masked by her perfectly trained smile. Taking a look at him, she let out a small laugh from his still wet hair and math themed shirt. “It’s alright.” She said, shaking her head. “Did you just get out of the shower?” His dripping hair seemed to give that factor away, unless he’d just ran through a sprinkler or two before opening the door. He looked kind of cute, in a helpless puppy dog sort of way.
She tightened her grip on her book as she stood in the doorway, waiting to be let in. Was she supposed to hug him? Kiss him? Erica kept a smile on her face, despite the internal panic that was happening.
“Yeah, I had ran around the block and didn’t want you to suffer through male bo.” He joked his bright smile dimmed in the slightest as he tried to figure out how he was going to physically greet her. last time they saw each other they kissed but they were also drunk so did that cancel out? Would doing nothing be just as weird? he asked himself not sure about the social protocol. He opened the door further and moved forward not sure if he was going to kiss her or give her a awkward but friendly hug.
“Then I’m glad you took a shower.” Erica said with a laugh. Seeing him move forward, she hesitated and went in for a sort of hug, her books restricting her form hugging him too tightly. “Uh--” She stepped back, giving an uncomfortable laugh. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she looked past Jake into his house and gestured towards it. “Should we... study?” She asked, the tension she was feeling in the situation making her more uncomfortable by the second.
It’s a long story.
There’s a long story behind your sleep problems? Alright, whatever. Are you new? I’ve like never seen you around before.
jennxbarrett:
I guess you could say that.
You guess?
jennxbarrett:
I would love to actually be able to sleep at night, honestly. But it’s not going to happen and it sucks.
Do you have like insomnia or something?

Jake was pleasantly surprised to get a text from Erica. It’s not like they didn’t say they would study, they did, but he still didn’t expect it. He smiled at his phone then around his room checking for clutter. Besides a glass of water by his bedside and a stack of textbooks on his desk his room was imaculate. He grabbed his Pre Calculus textbook and tossed it on his bed and moved his book bag by the foot of his bed. He felt content until his eyes roamed to his mirror he had came back from a run not an hour prior. He jumped into the shower and left the bathroom at the exact moment he heard the doorbell. He put on sweatpants and a black shirt that read “Math illiteracy affects 8 out of 5 people” he went downstairs and his mom was about to answer the door so he shooed her away. “HEY!” Jake smiled brightly as a drop fell from his wet hair onto his shirt. “Hope the wait wasn’t long.”

It had been a week since the bonfire, and practically a week since Erica had seen Jake. Any time that she saw him in the halls, she turned and walked the other way, not knowing what she was going to say to him when she finally saw him. It was inevitable though, since he was pretty much her last hope in getting an A in Pre Calculus, so she was going to have to talk to him eventually. She remembered the kiss vividly, but couldn’t remember much else, like the events leading up to it. She didn’t know how she felt about Jake. She didn’t know much of anything. It was with reluctance that she texted him, asking if they could study that weekend. Erica wasn’t sure what was going to happen, or whether or not it would be too awkward to actual study, but she knew she needed to get an A in Pre Calculus.
Driving up to his house, Erica just kept tapping her fingers against the steering wheel nervously. She had kissed a Sophomore for goodness sakes. True, she knew people that had relationships with far larger age gaps, but this felt different. With each moment she had in the car alone, she felt more and more nervous about meeting with Jake again. Before she knew it, she was at his house, ringing the doorbell with still not the slightest clue of what to expect.
