Ball and pillow structures - Often occur with interbedding between sandstones and mudstones and are the result of physical shock applied to these unconsolidated sediments. Lobes from the overlying sediment are broken off often during earthquakes, volcanoes, rapid sedimentation rates, or meteorite impacts and drift down into the underlying sediments. Ball structures are still attached, whereas pillow structures have become completely detached into the other sediment.
Next, flame structures are also a type of deformation in unlithified sediments. The weight of the overlying bed forces sediments up from the underlying bed. In order for this to occur, both sediment layers need to be saturated with water, the overlying bed must have a higher density than the underlying bed, or pressure differences between the two, and lastly the beds have to undergo additional stress usually in the form of an earthquake, volcanic activity, meteorite activity.
