Comparison views of “Mystic Mountain”
These two images of a pillar of star birth, three light-years high, demonstrate how observations taken in visible and infrared light by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveal dramatically different and complementary views of an object. This turbulent cosmic pinnacle lies within a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina.

Man, we all know space is beautiful, but this photo from our old pal Hubble is melting my mind right now. That red orb of gas is what’s left of a progenitor start that went full on supernova around 600 years ago, according to NASA. Look at it within the bed of stars near and far: Within all the tiny dots, which are all incredibly massive balls of fire, there’s a glowing sphere expanding outward as the spectacular reminder of what happens when galactic chemistry goes apeshit.
According to the folks at NASA, the object is known as SNR B0519-69.0, or SNR 0519 if you’re on friendly terms. It’s located more than 150,000 light years away “in the southern constellation of Dorado (The Dolphinfish), a constellation that also contains most of our neighboring galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).”
Curiously, the start SNR 0519 is born of is known to be a white dwarf that was similar to our own Sun. So, while I’m not going to say that it’s a mirror image of a cosmic selfie we Earthlings may take in a few billion years when our own Sun possibly explodes, it is pretty interesting to think that, even with our miniscule presence in the universe, our solar system may one day make its mark. Of course, we’ll all be blown up/dead already, but hey, at least it’d look cool.

Interacting Galaxies Arp 142 (by Hubble Heritage)
Mystic Mountain, released for Hubble’s 20th anniversary, reveals a landscape never before studied in such detail. These pillars show the telltale signature of new stars forming at their tips and strong jets of material being ejected into the interstellar medium for great distances. Many such features are seen in the Carina Nebula, a vast area of dust and gas in our Milky Way Galaxy. This is the most obvious and spectacular example, similar to others in an immense Hubble mosaic made a few years before. Learn more

WHAT LIES BEYOND NEPTUNE Pluto may no longer be considered a planet, but that doesn’t mean it wants for company. Since Pluto’s discovery in 1930, scientists have discovered over 1,200 Trans-Neptunian Objects, listed here:http://bit.ly/9wt4Rt Though Pluto’s reclassification was controversial among those who had grown up knowing it as one of the nine planets, its position in the Kuiper belt places it in the company of several other smaller bodies. The qualifications for a Trans-Neptunian Object incorporates a broad volume of space that plays host to bodies of wildly varying sizes—the Kuiper Belt, the scattered disc, and the Oort cloud. Of these, scientists have discovered a number of distant icy worlds that are either classified or vying for classification as dwarf planets. Pictured here are 8 of the brightest, though not necessarily the largest, TNOs discovered. Eris is the largest, at 27% more massive than Pluto, and possesses a tiny moon only 150 km across known as Dysnomia. [1] The name is fitting—Eris was the Greek goddess of discord, and the similarity of this dwarf planet to Pluto was a major contributing factor to the former 9th planet’s demotion. Makemake is the 3rd largest after Pluto, and appears to have neither satellites nor an atmosphere. [2] Haumea’s unique ellipsoid shape, rapid orbit, and two tiny moons Hiʻiaka and Nāmaka, are all believed to be the result of collisions that created much of this debris-littered volume of space. [3] Sedna is one of the most distant known objects in the Solar system, orbiting at three times the distance from Pluto to Earth. Because of its small size, it is not recognized by the IAU as a dwarf planet and its status—like Pluto’s—is hotly contested. Its extremely elliptical orbit at the very fringes of the Solar system have led some astronomers to believe that Sedna is the first directly observed body in the hypothetical Oort cloud. [4] Orcus, orbited by its moon Vanth, is often referred to as the “anti-Pluto.” Due to Neptune’s gravitational influence, both objects have the same orbital period but are locked in opposite phases of their orbits—when one is at its closest to the sun, the other is at its furthest. [5] Both Quaoar and 2007 OR10 are believed to be covered in water ice, but observation has revealed that their surfaces are reddish in color. It’s believed that radiation from space converted the methane that remained in their atmospheres to hydrocarbon chains that give the ice its rosy color. The water ice itself is thought to have spewed from cryovolcanoes long ago. [6] Quaoar’s tiny moon, Weywot, is estimated to be only 74 km across. [7] Both the distance and small size of these icy microworlds present challenges for researchers who study Trans-Neptunian Objects, but further observation of the debris that lies at the outer edges of our Solar System will give us important clues regarding its formation. -RLO This post originally appeared at The Universe on Facebook
(NASA) Big, beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 7331 is often touted as an analog to our own Milky Way. About 50 million light-years distant in the northern constellation Pegasus, NGC 7331 was recognized early on as a spiral nebula and is actually one of the brighter galaxies not included in Charles Messier’s famous 18th century catalog. Since the galaxy’s disk is inclined to our line-of-sight, long telescopic exposures often result in an image that evokes a strong sense of depth. The effect is further enhanced in this well-framed view by the galaxies that lie beyond this gorgeous island universe. The background galaxies are about one tenth the apparent size of NGC 7331 and so lie roughly ten times farther away. Their strikingly close alignment on the sky with NGC 7331 occurs just by chance. The visual grouping of galaxies is also known as the Deer Lick Group.
Earth’s Hellish ‘Twin Sister’ Discovered
Two studies of an Earth-sized planet circling the sun-like star Kepler-78 show it has Earth-like amounts of iron and rock, the first world of its size that scientists have been able to calculate both density and diameter
But don’t pack your bags yet. The planet, known as Kepler-78b, circles sizzlingly close to its parent star, far from an Earth-like water-friendly orbit, a condition that is believed to be necessary for life.

Spitzer and ALMA Reveal a Star’s Bubbly Birth
It’s a bouncing baby … star! Combined observations from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and the newly completed Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile have revealed the throes of stellar birth as never before in the well-studied object known as HH 46/47.
Herbig-Haro (HH) objects form when jets shot out by newborn stars collide with surrounding material, producing small, bright, nebulous regions. To our eyes, the dynamics within many HH objects are obscured by enveloping gas and dust. But the infrared and submillimeter wavelengths of light seen by Spitzer and ALMA, respectively, pierce the dark cosmic cloud around HH 46/47 to let us in on the action.
