OPEN NOTE TO SUPERNATURAL
I started watching Supernatural a few years ago. At first, just a few episodes off and on, here and there, which recently evolved to an unhealthy level of binge watching over the last few months. So, I can honestly say that I've been a fan for the last few years, a devout fan for the last few months... and a practicing pagan for about 10 years now. While I love your show, I'm disappointed with how you represent the pagan community, and here's why:
No you don't, because although this is easily mistaken for one, this is not a pentagram. It's a pentacle and is one of the most recognizable symbols among Witches, Wiccans, and Pagans alike. It represents a balance of nature. Each point represents an element; Air, Earth, Fire, Water, with Spirit (or Akasha, Aether, etc.) at the top. The symbol is so widespread because the typical goal of a witch is to live a lifestyle that's harmonious with nature. Although many of the individual beliefs differ between various breeds of paganism, the goals are often the same and typically follow the golden role which is best expressed by Wicca, “As it harms none, do as thou wilt.” Today, a witch's lifestyle is for the betterment of their life and the lives around them, as well as nature in general.
Now this is an inverted pentacle but is more commonly referred to as a pentagram. It's one of the most recognizable symbols of Satanism, and the Occult, and is most commonly found at Hot Topic. This one is shared by Satanists and Occultists alike. Satanism, much like Pastafarianism began as a satirical play on Christianity. Satanism follows the principle belief, “You are your own God,” and typically doesn't actually recognize Satan. Occultism, founded by Aleister Crowley, claims to be the “knowledge of the hidden,” that does seem to recognize Lucifer, but in a different light. (However, there still seems of be a lot of controversy on which religion “worships” Satan and which does not.)
Back to the former camp, Paganism predates Christianity for thousands of years, so a belief in the devil, much less worship, is completely nonsensical. Wicca is also separate from Christianity, so any devil worship from us is also a widespread myth. We're simply not going to worship something that we don't believe in. Most of these myths come from early Christian lure, in the sense that if we're not worshiping Jesus, we must be worshiping the devil. Of course there are some people that do like to twist these religions/ spiritual paths around, because they haven't done their research. They're mainly frowned upon, if not laughed at by the real magick community out there, but hey, you have your Westboro Baptist Church and ISIS out there too. While a witch silently meditating in the woods doesn't quite scream the sort of drama that your show typically provides, it would be nice to see an accurate representation of us just once. If Sam or Dean would run into one of us in real life, we're likely to be one of the good guys. Just saying...
