Robot to eat with

This is the Tinker Bell when I was writing on this blog. Blue bird cafe on 1st street.

I was complaining about not having a proper place to get lunch. Kaho suggested Murray's Bagel. Lentil soup was so so, so I got chicken noodle soup which was also so so. Bagel was fine.

Tinker bell in your pocket

What is most striking about the culture of contemporary mobile computing is how technology becoming more human and human adapts in becoming more like a machine. As the technology learns to speak and understand the human language, humans are also learning the dialects and body language of speaking through and with the machines. At this point, it may be interesting to pose a question that has already been answered, Can areal relationship build out of virtual or mediated technology?

"In my friend's room, early 80s, there was a macintosh computer, a bit outdated as it was sitting in his room, not his fathers study. They must have brought it back to Korea from the United States, Macs were very uncommon in Korea. He was showing off a computer game. There was an artificial chat program with a man's name. I was really excited to try it out, but he said it's boring and wouldn't let me play it. The idea that a machine can talk back to you, albeit limited to responses based on algorithm, was fascinating. I wanted to ask where God is, what is his idea of food, and things like that. However we went on to do other things. It was few more years until I had a chance to get a computer of my own, and at that time it was connected to the network and I was chatting with a real person."

Mobile phones and laptop computers are machines, things, which many of us in the first world spend most of our time with. They are designed to mediate and enhance communication with others in distance. However At some point, the machines replace the real beings, and becomes an almost real thing. The machines endure physical interaction with us, it is their physicality that adds to their humanness.

"In South Korea, there is a subculture of celebrity fandom, internet based fan clubs that builds a community of people with similar taste and interest in boy bands or alike. Within the most dedicated fans, there is an alternative reality game that each one plays role of the band members and they would send text message to each other. In the morning, you would receive a text message from your favorite member, and you would send a text back to the sender as another member. A real friendship is created through this role playing of their mutual interest. In this case, mobile phones are the venetian mask in a party full of naked people. The desire for love and friendship can be substituted via mobile phone messages."

Can a real feeling arise from unreal relationship? Yes, of course. Then, does that make a real relations? Not so sure. One might argue that even if the relations are not in real life, if it invokes real life emotions and one is able to live with it as part of their life, therefore it is as good as the real relations. Mobile technology is a window to the world, a paper cup phone between two friends. It can also be the world in a shiny glass case, friends tinkering inside of pants pocket.

"Few weeks ago, when Steve Jobs died, many people were mourning for the death of a popular hero that represents self made businessman and a successful artist. It was his legacy as a businessman and a performer that contained many meaning and symbolism in contemporary culture. There is little doubt that the user interaction and design of Macintosh products are superior than other machines of the time, and his ability as a businessman and technologist is worth respect. However, what interested me most was how people seemed to have developed a personal relationship with Steve Jobs through the products they consume. The spectacle of new product release presentation, ubiquitous marketing and quality controlled products, Macintosh product has become material and portable resurrection of his persona. Touching the glassy screens of Iphone and the smooth keyboards of MacBook Air, people were enjoying being near him. In the world where user interaction of commodity technology is valued more than any other aspects of the product, Mac products are the divine relic for those who worship the god of Consumption. And the revelation comes without hassel, only through possession. A tinker bell is already inside of your pocket is ready. "
