Smoke sat atop the OIA building, watching everyone go about their days with what the still had. Much of the world had been ravaged, and many families were torn apart in this endless fights.

Yet there were sparks of feelings, some Smoke had wished he could deny.

Cassie was practicing, kicking everyone to the curb. Just like he trained her. Good.

And he watched as Kuai Liang was doing patrols, his attention distant and barely focused on those around him.

A spark of something darker, the pride pushed aside.

Smoke glared. As if Kuai Liang would have noticed if he was right there next to him. Did the idiot even remember his name at this point? No. Always chasing the specter of his brother, a man who would rather he just move on at this point. 

He was competing with a memory. Invisible to the one person he had left. It was something Smoke was ashamed to admit. So what if they had been friends?

Smoke narrowed his eyes, feeling his eyes heat up. Back when he had cried, that was a sign tears were going to start. But now wisps of smoke seeped out instead. And he hated that because it meant that Kuai Liang was still able to hurt him.

i recently read a tweet by Hugh Laurie about House MD being formulaic and the same plot repeated over and over again. The point of it was that it's okay to enjoy the same thing over and over again, just how JS Bach wrote variations on the same theme and we still consider him one of the greatest composers to ever live. Sometimes we just really like carrot cake.
