As well as the music and 9 poems written by Peter, the initial inspiration for the costumes of a-Volution came from a performance piece which took place on a McQueen runway show.
Two robots spray-painted a dress worn by the model Shalom Harlow, the raw drips of colour against the pale white background evoked the perfect balance of emotion and subtle beauty without completely overpowering the performance.
In much the same way the pieces I have selected for the performers to wear are somewhat simplistic in structure and colour, intending to draw the viewer into this dream-like, melancholic world not to distract them.

Peter Power’s ambitious and thrilling music blew me away when I first experienced it as part of Solstice at the 2011 Festival. I am delighted to present the largest work to date by this distinctive young composer and his impressive team of collaborators as part of this year’s Festival.

David Duffy & Peter Power (& Irene O'Mara) - Eat My Noise Productions, storyboarding for A:Volution
What is Storyboarding?
Making a layout plan for the show - which compositional piece of music goes where, where would we like lighting effects, where we would like some Audio Visual input?
Our team of designers is hot on our assess to deliver them a clear plan so they can design the final ideas around the music.
But its HARD!
It's like trying to fit together a jig saw you've never seen. You just follow the path that presents itself, and hope what you are doing ends up with a picture that not only makes sense, but looks like it was in there all along. It's head wrecking.
1: Our staple debate. How far can you push an audience before you alienate them and does it matter? Dave is all about the audience, Peter is all about the Challenge. Inevitably we find a middle ground.
2: With two composers, compromise is always at the heart of our music. Although we sit on opposite sides on a lot of decisions, those debates inevitably lead to more concrete musical decisions but they don't come easily .
3. Finally don't try finalise a show two days after a very big night out. Two unhappy Eats = unhappy Eat My Noise.
A Fragment of our a:Volution spiral.

How composing works at Eat My Noise Productions
With our first rehearsal sessions a week away at the Theatre Development Centre at Triskel Peter & Dave are composing day and night to get the the piece in shape to test it out on musicians. You may be wondering what exactly they are doing? So here's a glimpse of what Peter Power's work-space looks like.
Colours and Phases
Keeping track of a phase is a colourful challenge. In the photo above you can see the notes represented by colours, the colours are chords. The chords are the same but shared across the string section, so nothing changes, but its always moving.
In working with the sounds adding another dimension, a visual dimension in this case is another tool to mould the work. Allowing the sound to be seen... no ears, no listening at this point.
This is just a snap shot of the processes that Eat My Noise use to compose their work. Finding ways to bring out the complex sounds and ideas from brain to page is a complex process when writing for orchestra, so complex and varied approaches are often the best approach.
We'll be giving you insights throughout the process as we work towards the performance at the end of June. Watch this space for all the behind the scenes from the composers and our designers.
The tickets are now available from Cork Midsummer Festival. We are delighted and terrified that its all becoming real now...
We only have two performances... that's it! Its going to be magical
