20 years ago today I lost my childhood innocence. I fared better than so many others. I got to come home to our house in one piece, my school reopened and my parents’ livelihood remained in New Orleans. I was one of the lucky ones. It does not matter what side of the river, where you evacuated to or what you lost. We are a city united in grief and that grief haunts us 20 years later. I was 9 years old watching the news with my family as my hometown drowned and was left for dead on national tv. Do you know what it does to a child to hear people say that we should just leave New Orleans and not rebuild? To be called a city of sinners reaping our punishment from god? Those words never leave you. I had a happy childhood even after the storm, but I was not the same person. The people in power now are actually worse than they were in 2005. I’m genuinely afraid for what will happen with the next storm. The difference now is that it’s not just New Orleans who has been left to rot. The government does not care about us. If they did FEMA would be funded, the NWS would be funded and our coastal restoration plans would not have been cancelled. So, forgive me for being sad and morose, but fuck I have seen some shit and I’m so tired.
