The relationship between Tezuka and Ryoma is a peculiar one. On some level, it resembles the relationship between Ryoma and his father. On the other hand, there is something special and unique about it. It is not a simple relationship between a buchou and his kouhai, between team mate, between a mentor/big brother and a kid, between friends, but more like a combination of all of the above. There is admiration, respect, and absolute trust between the two. I think that Tezuka sees a part of himself in Ryoma, and it is not just the talent. He knows how far Ryoma can go and willing to push him to reach his full potential. And to Ryoma, Tezuka is a challenge that he wants to overcome, a puzzle he wants to solve, but also an inspiration of sort. At the same time, they are very different from each other, which mean they provide great foil for the other’s personality, offering a contrast between the two pillars of Seigaku.
