Fixed to its base and weighing down the entire piece is a caged mass of three kinds of nails. At the bottom is an old railroad spike from the Western expansion. Above it, the remains of a large nail pulled from the heart of an old growth hemlock tree. I suspect the tree was spiked to protect it, but was felled anyway. Lastly, three nails I pulled from the collapsed remains of the oldest homestead site in the region of Eastern Oregon I used to live in, first established in the 1860s. The Northern Paiutes used to grow corn there, now it's mostly dust.
Convenience isn't bad because of some inherent value in toil or it rots your soul. Convenience is bad because it often comes at the cost of an exploited underclass. I don't care if someone wants to taxi their meal to their house instead of making it themselves or even driving to the restaurant themselves. I care that meal delivery apps underpay their workers (they don't even consider them their workers), provide no workplace protections, and prey on their desperation.
The desire for convenience is a morally neutral thing (no matter how many capitalists want their workers to see unproductivity or aversion to the "grind" as a moral failing). Companies that sell you only convenience by making it worse for yourself and for others are not.
A kingfisher made from a circular saw blade, paint pen, and spray paint. I sketched it, @echomary cut it out and added the copper eye, and I painted it. This was a gift, but we'd love to make more birds like this! What birds would you want to see?
We burned our yule log early this year.
@mcromwell and I did this solstice tradition a little early this year on account of the vibes being right for it.
So I took down our little Kringlefucker tree from last year, sawed off the butt and it helped warm our home through the night, as is tradition.
