Social media thrives on hashtagging. When searching #picturebooks there is a range of responses popping up about all sorts of things. These range from book releases, children reading, activities about books, drawings, author profiles and range of picture books. There is a vast range of responses on different social media platforms but very similar. Even though it seems to be a direct search for picture books, there is a range of different things that pop up, that people are classifying as #picturebook. To use this in a classroom wouldn’t be as effective as first thought, as #picturebooks into Google first comes into Twitter which isn’t age appropriate for primary school age students.

Introducing: Little Bot & Sparrow!

My new book from Roaring Brook Press comes out in September. Way back in Jan of 2014 I posted that my goal that year was to get a children’s book made of these two. Over two years later I’m thrilled to finally share this book with you! It’s been a long crazy road, and I’ll tell the story sometime, but I’m glad to finally be here!

To celebrate I’ll be doing art drops of two Little Bot & Sparrow drawings while I’m in Chicago this week. If you’re in the Chicago area or know someone who is, one of my drawings could be yours! I’ll post more on that tomorrow.

PROMPT 7

There a range of different post that come up #picturebooks with a range of favorite picture books to great illustrations to book releases posted to inform the Tumblr community. While researching #picturebook, I came across a book releases ‘Little Bot and Sparrow’ by Jake Parker, which will be released. This has been added through Mr Jake Parker linked at <www.mrjakeparker.com>.

Prompt 6

This particular video ‘Learn a Dhurga greeting’ is a fantastic frontloading activity to allow students to begin thinking about different languages. This video will allow certain curriculum standards to be addressed; these specifically include ‘understand that different social and geographical dialects or accents are used in Australia in addition to Standard Australian English, (ACELA1515)’. Students will be learning about how many different dialects there are in the world and in particular within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander districts around Australia or even in their own region. This video will be a great opener to this particular topic for grade 6’s. From here students will be able to lead onto a picture storybook that is about different languages around the world. Students will proceed through a unit discussion language and story telling and will be able to discuss aspects of stories through pictures.

 Front loading:

This book touches on very real topics that need to be treated with great care, respect and maturity. For younger students these images might be very confronting and real. To front load and prepare for the students for this book, I would look through the ‘Save the Children Australia’ website. This will begin to tackle the real reason and get students thinking and discussing topics they might not realise is prevalent. The lesson will provide lots of discussion and students asking questions. Through the book students will be able to get their questions answered.

WEEK 4 PROMPT

This is a fantastic display.

It was in a grade 2 classroom allowing for students to understand the different sections of a story. The students came up with the ideas, each having an input. The teacher used popular books the students knew and read them within the class. From this the students were able to tell a recount of what happened and break down the books, the main characters, the plot, problem, solution and ending. This was a good lead into writing their narratives, as they knew the key elements of a story they needed to add into theirs.

WEEK THREE REFLECTION

We read a wide range of texts throughout a day. This can simply be reading your alarm clock as soon as you wake up in the morning or when you go the supermarket. If you drive there you need to read the street signs, the parking signs to ensure you can park there and for how long, looking at you shopping list, finding the items, looking at what isle they are in, seeing how much they are, finding the correct money, looking at your receipt, going back to your car and driving home. Again looking at the signs and even in your car to ensuring you have enough petrol left to get you home.

As a result of this topic when teaching I will ensure to explore many different text types with students to allow them to realise there is so many different types of texts. Its not just the books we reading or the writing we have written.

WEEK TWO REFLECTION 

When teaching about how to predict I will show the front cover of the book ‘Are You Seeing Me?’ by Darren Groth. When I show the front cover I will cover the words, and simply have the pictures. This will encourage them to use the picture to come up with a predication of what they think will happen in the book. I shall prompt the students with questions like, what do you think will happen? What can you see in the picture? Do the colors mean anything? At this stage the students will have the jotter pads, and writing down their predications. They will have the opportunity to think, pair and share about their predications.

Picking out a few to write down as a class what we think this book might be about. I will remove the covers of the words, and let the students suggest ideas of what they think the book might be about now. They have the option to change their predication and again think, pair and share. As a group we will see what predication from the pictures are still relevant and see if we want to change our predication.

From there we would begin reading the book, throughout the book would come back to the predications to see how accurate we were through just looking at the cover of the book.

WEEK ONE REFLECTION

Reading was always a special time in school. When I was in grade one, I remember for the first fifteen minutes after lunch we would have relaxation time. The teacher would turn off all the lights; we would all have a pillow and lay on the ground. It was a time for us all to relax after lunch and get read a story. As we progressed through school this time would be spent doing individual reading for the fifteen minutes after lunch.

My favorite book ‘The Rainbow Fish’ that we read in the class was by the same teacher in grade one. We had this as a big book in class; everyone in the class loved it. It had beautiful pictures and a fantastic meaning. It allowed me to learn how to share, make friends and why we need to be kind of one another. The book had great value and something I will definitely share with my future class.
