Curious Kids: why does English have so many different spelling rules?

·         So accurate and relatable

·         It is always hard to remember even now in 3rd year of uni

·         For grade 5 / 6 students this is excellent they can relate

·         Excellent for grade 5/6 students because they are not often told    something is hard to understand

·         So many great ideas for activities can come from this -boggle games-matching word games- creating charts to remember word rules

·         The English language is hard to learn, games surrounding the issue of spelling rules creating engagement will help students learn

PROMPT 7 (RESPONSE) 2018

This resource was a particularly interesting and informative and it is definitely a resource that I would consider bringing into the classroom if I was teaching either grade 5 or grade 6.

In particular, this resource can be used by both teachers and students to help guide story writing as it gives clarification and strategies for how to develop characters, plots, genres/setting, choice of vocabulary and use of emotion to engage readers.

This mind map is representation of my reflections on the resource and the notes I took that I would share with fellow teachers.

This activity will help students use better words.

Your students will love engaging their minds to identify the scariest verbs and adverbs to creep out their friends and teacher with their story!

The interactive ABC video provides sufficient instructions for students to work independently. Follow on activities could include:

- semantic gradient games for any choice of words

- students writing for 5 minutes on an event they experienced in the past week

- students writing engaging short stories using an extended vocabulary

The above link discusses the use of illustrations in storytelling. It discusses colour, tone, line and expression. The story is about a teddy and it's identity. As the story goes on the illustrations change to match the emotions of the teddy or situation.

I find this resource extremely useful for students to understand and create text through illustration. Meaning making for children can be complex and any aides we can provide for them will be beneficial to their learning.

In constructing text, the use of illustrations provide alternatives for students to present their expressions and emotions. The limitation to this is that some students are not confident in illustrating and may not be able to express their true meaning.

This was useful when reading and constructing my assignment as the text i chose provided vague text and relied on illustrations to tell the story. This provided a great insight for me to understand the text greater and see it as an impactful resource to teach children for understanding text.

The resource I decided to critique was the ‘Draw an elephant in action’ video. The 9 minute video was engaging and entertaining for grade 5 and 6. What I particularly enjoyed was illustrator Andrew Joyner’s enthusiasm and approach to teaching a simple drawing. The words he says alongside the drawing itself, as well as the gestures he makes. He makes it a “sporty” activity and breaks down drawing an elephant so well, for children to remember and do in their own time. This resource is a great short video to show within a classroom.
