ECL310: PROMPT 5

1. My skin is cold and my body is hollow. I have not seen food. My transparent body has no more strength to live as I watch others die in the silence of the night. 

2. Dust: We take for granted what others don't even have

3. Frontloading Task: Individually, students will be given 10 tokens. The teacher will explain that the 10 tokens represent money for items that if living on their own, would represent the ability to buy things. The items will resemble the following  (TV: 2 tokens, Food 4 tokens, water 1 token etc.) Student’s will have to delegate the tokens to what they believe are the most important things they can’t live without. 

The teacher will then show them how many people below the poverty line don’t have the bare necessities and that delegating tokens for things such as a TV, computer are completely unnecessary for people in these situations and compare the way we live to others.

ECL310: Prompt 4 (Classroom Display) 

During my two weeks on placement, there was a display on the classroom wall of this grade 3/4 class that really caught my eye. It was a spot on the wall which the teacher and students referred to as the “Key to Success Wall”. There were 5 key steps to success and happiness, not only in the classroom at school but in life. 

Throughout my time on placement, I constantly referred back to these steps as a way to influence the student’s behaviour and the commitment to their work/ friendships. For example, there were some student’s who felt as though the work was too difficult or something they wouldn’t be able to complete. This is where I always made sure students reflected back on the ‘Key to success’ wall which gave them motivation and hope for success. 

When I have the opportunity to have my own classroom, I will aim to ensure that I have certain targets and motivational words for student’s to always have as a reference. I hope each and every student feels proud of the work they put up and having posters/words in the class that promote success and happiness is something that will definitely motivate students to feel proud of their work and show them that success does not come easy , it requires hard work and determination.

ECL310: Prompt 3

This week I have engaged in various texts which each had a different purpose. Majority of the reading I engaged in this week was digital and  related to social media. Scanning through Facebook as well as twitter accounts Is usually a part of my weekly routine. Checking my emails is something I do daily, this includes my Deakin email using Outlook as well as my everyday account using Gmail. 

Since I am constantly trying to get on top of my assignments, I am frequently checking any updates that appear on CloudDeakin, as well as scanning through the assignment rubrics to ensure I am on the right track. Aside from digital texts, this week I also read the daily newspaper ‘Herald Sun’ as a way to get up to date with any word issues as well as any interested stories and headlines that appeared. I also assisted my brother with his year 12 English homework this week, which required me to read through a text and test him on what kind of persuasive techniques he was able to detect.

ECL310: Prompt 2 (Prediction activity)

‘Are you seeing me’ by Darren Groth is a great book to use for a grade 5/6 prediction activity. 

I would begin my class discussion by presenting the front cover of the book to the students, explaining to them that it is entirely up to them to determine what they think the book might be about as well what features of the cover are going to impact what the story line might be. 

Student’s will have roughly 10 minutes to complete the worksheet using the features of the front cover that stand out to them. E.g. What images do you see? What do the colours represent? What kind of emotion do you think this book will bring out in people. Student’s will come back to the floor and we will have a group discussion on what most student’s believed the book was about and why. 

I will ask questions such as : “Why do you think the colour black represented emptiness and loneliness?” These kinds of open ended questions will evolve the student’s vocabulary and ability to use descriptive language. They also allow student’s to express their emotions and express their feelings to their fellow peers.

ECL310: PROMPT 1 

As a young girl, I remember my mum had a huge collection of all my favourite fantasy/ fairytale stories that she would read to me before bed most nights. My favourite of all the stories was Little Red Riding Hood. 

I remember my mum always reading the story to me with such enthusiasm and effort. She would always speak in the voice of each character and somehow manage to keep me on my toes wondering what was going to happen next, even though I already knew. 

I will never forget these memories I have with my  mum and they will stay with me forever. I hope one day when I have children or even for my future classroom, that I can also leave them with these wonderful memories just as my mum made for me.
