ECL310 Prompt 1 reflection

I remember this book being read to me when I was in middle years of Primary School. This story reflected a creature during the Aboriginal dreaming which resembled a ‘bigfoot’ like creature that would terrorise the native animals and tribes in the area.

The reason I chose to reflect on this book was because I still consider it to be one of my favourite stories as a child. I was really into mythology and legends as a kid, including Greek mythology and urban stories of unknown creatures such as ‘bigfoot’. I remember my library teacher reading this to my class when I would've been in about grade 3/4 and I remember vividly borrowing the book as soon as the session had ended. I was obsessed about learning about Australian dreaming stories and other creatures that existed thousands of years ago.

Prompt 1

Throughout my whole primary i enjoyed my teachers reading to us, like you said the the post we also were in silence, imagining and thinking about what time happen next. 

I remember a book in year 6, ‘Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter’ By Adeline Yen Mah being read to us during our reading lessons. I remember comparing myself and putting myself in Adelines shoes and all the emotions she felt. It was a book that stood out to me and made me want to continue reading the sequel.

ECL310 - Prompt 1 2018 ‘The Little Mouse, The Red-Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear’ is my first memory of having a book read to me as a child. My mum still tells stories about how much she grew to hate the book because of the number of times I requested it before bed. I can remember the great illustrations and how the book forced me to imagine the bear instead of showing one. This let my imagination do the work and I believe that’s better than anything that could have been written!

Throughout primary school, majority of the teachers I had would read novels to the class. it was always a nice way to end a day/week and enjoy feeling as though you were apart of the book. I remember my 5/6 teacher reading ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ to us and using incredible expression, always finishing a chapter with us wanting to continue reading. I found it was a great way to work as a class and practice visualising various scenes and characters.

When i was in primary school, not sure what grade it was but i had my Grandfather come in as a substitute teacher. During his time with us he read Andy Griffiths ‘The Day my Bum went Psycho’. Instantly all the kids were interested because of the title but we all as a class enjoyed it so much that we ended up getting how teacher when she cam back to finished the book with us. On placement I saw a similar thing with Paul Jennings and is something i would like to take into my own classroom

In year 11 English, we all read Julius Caesar as a class. However at some points, our teacher would take the lead and read to us. Whenever he would read, the whole classroom would go silent as he captivated everyone’s attention with the tone of his voice. His reading was always clear and fluent and he made sure he was always expressive. He brought the text to life and helped us create an image of what the characters felt like just by utilising various tones and expressions in his voice. Through him reading to us I became more engaged and interested in the storyline. This helped me realise how powerful reading aloud can be and it inspired me to improve on my own reading as well. Thus I began to read more expressively and wanted to captivate people’s attention through reading aloud the same way he did with us.

As I was going through Primary School, the Harry Potter series was coming out. I was a very passionate reader and used to read the Harry Potter books with Dad every night before bed. I believe that this greatly improved my reading ability, but it also increased my bond with the Dad and improved my confidence in reading big novels.
