It’s might seem like an odd question but @ all Maurice fans: what season do you associate the book/movie with?!!

It changes depending on which section of the story we’re talking about. :)

I associate Cambridge with ‘the sights and sounds of the May term’: late spring and early summer. I don’t associate the middle section with any particular season. And Maurice’s return to Penge and Maurice/Alec I associate above all with RAIN.

The seasonal associations of that third act are blurred because the whole film was shot in a different season (Autumn–Winter) from the August of Maurice’s week’s holiday and visit to Penge around his 24th birthday. I think James Ivory said somewhere they had about one day of sun during the shoot – miraculously, for the cricket match <333 – but that seems a slight exaggeration, e.g. Maurice and Clive’s day out in the Fens looks sunny too…

I see it as an all the year round thing.

Cambridge bits do feel like Spring - not exactly May to me, because in my corner of the world May is usually rather hot and dry, with occasional showers.

Most indoor scenes have a wintry atmosphere (with the notable exception of Maurice having breakfast while the women are preparing to go to Church, that screams Spring!)

The only real Summer feeling I got was from Clive in Greece, but I guess that’s me, those are the lights and sounds of Summer I’m used to.

The cricket match does look summery enough, but most bits with Alec have an Autumn look - the colours, the light, the mist, Alec’s clothes (now as I was writing it, I thought it must be the colours mainly).

Does this make any sense?

In my case, I just believe as I’m told in the book ;) I’ve read it so many times while watching the film (and listening to an audiobook version) that I have it all uniformally mixed in my head ;)

I think it mostly depends on how much one is familiar with the British weather. As I am from Poland, I am used to very different winters than @solikearose . Rather snowy than rainy (weII obviously we experience climate changes now but nevertheless). I agree with @somewhereinmalta that this one scene with Maurice refusing to go to church feels very much Spring-like, while the cricket match - Summer-like. :-) and rain generally seems just a very English thing to someone living elswhere. :-)

@fermencja it all depends on where you live in Britain but here in North West England weather is rather temperamental - it can be incredibly rainy and incredibly sunny within an hour, especially in autumn and spring it’s like having several seasons a day! Winters are usually rainy rather than snowy, although it snowed last week several times actually. And as I’ve already mentioned it is often quite sunny and bright but very cold, like right now it is quite bright out. Very crisp.

The cricket match does feel very summery though. Thinking about it now makes me wish it was summer!

Now that people are saying I do get a sense of spring from the film too….and when they talk about the evening primroses in the book that feels very spring like now that I think of it, or summery, like a late summer’s evening. It reminds me of a British late summer afternoon, I like walking then.

@anthony-blanche its interesting you say that because I read it for the first time during a winter so I suppose I associate it partly with winter as a result! Early winter though, like December time or maybe late autumn (I always forget that November isn’t the winter)….

My thinking behind the original post was that I tend to strongly associate things with certain seasons regardless of when the film/book was actually set; in Maurice’s case I read the book for the first time in the “wintertime” (actually a mid November I believe? I can’t remember exactly) and subsequently watched it in the same time. It was actually very very rainy when I read it for the first time lol. So as a result of that I probably associate it more with wintertime, both the crisp winter days and the rainy nights, even though large portions of the film and book may be set in springtime or early autumn as opposed to late autumn/early winter. The book especially, but also the movie, just give me very strong reminders of late autumn and early winter, almost in a way I can’t properly express or justify. But I know other people’s responses will be more related to the actual textual or movie setting rather than just a “feeling”. That makes more sense actually than my wishy-washy vagueness haha!
