It’s probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but after spending the last day watching Altered Carbon, I really wanted to rant about a few things that no one probably will care to read about the ending.
SPOILER WARNING BTW (I’m on my phone so I can’t add a cut here sorry)
Now that I got that out of the way - first off, I loved the show as a whole. It kept me on edge, I laughed at Joel Kinnaman’s sarcasm, and nearly died every time I saw his fine-ass. The ending shocked me, and the characters - god, I fell in love with them all. Overall, I’m nearly satisfied with how the show ended.
For the entire time, I was rooting for Kristin and Tak because I figured, why the hell not? They got that sarcastic banter and sexual tension between them that I think I couldn’t help BUT ship them together. Of course, after the reveal of (spoiler warning) Tak’s sleeve actually being her former lover, Ryker, I kinda took a step back and said, “hmm, maybe that’s why she liked Tak instead.” But after seeing them progress after that, seeing Tak’s affection for Kristin develop into love and seeing the way she truly cared and loved him, I began shipping them again.
But of course, the ending.
I’m not saying it’s a bad ending but I just…I’m not satisfied? I mean, it’s a happy ending for the characters - at least most of them - and it ends the show for now, but what about Tak? What about Kristin? I know that she was in love with Ryker, but judging by what we saw in the show, he was an unstable cop who couldn’t quite control his anger. And yes, I know Tak was in love with Quell but he KILLED his sister instead of taking what she was offering - Quell’s stack. A chance for her to come back, to be with him, and he turned it away. My thought was that he knew she wouldn’t want to come back - she may have been the creator of the stacks, but she despised what it had become, causing her to create a virus to kill once someone turned 100. He was respecting her hatred for what her creation became.
But when all was said and done, and Tak was helping Kristin fully move into her home? Seeing him in those last moments with her…it just made me SO sad. I knew that Ryker would be set free - because he really was innocent - but I figured that while Kristin’s love for Ryker was there, her love for Tak was more.
But of course, the ending had Tak go off in what I’m assuming either his original sleeve or a new one (since it’s implied that he was turning in his current sleeve for Ryker) to go look for his OG lover, Quell.
I hate that. I thought him and Quell together were cute but to me, he was finally able to move on from her, to love someone new.
I really want Tak and Kristin to be end game. Judging by how they said their goodbyes in the last few minutes of the show, I feel like they both have feeling for each other that they won’t admit. They both had this raw emotion behind their voices at the end and Kristin looked…sad, in a way, when he said that he was going off to find Quell. And Tak? God, in my opinion, he looked heartbroken.
But idk, maybe there’s more to the story. I haven’t read the books - maybe they really do get together. But for now, I’m just a single fan who’s opinion doesn’t matter. I may ship Tak and Kristin but I feel like it’s a very unpopular opinion - we’ll just have to see as the tumblr community finishes the show.
But for those who didn’t read my really long rant, here you go.
Tl:dr - I hated the ending. I thought there was more between Kristin and Tak and I want them to be endgame.
