We Don't have to change. It's just the way we're wired.
(Based on American Gothic by Grant Wood)
I'm sorry but one of the most important scenes in Dispatch is Invisigal's wet dream. I'm not even joking. I love that it was much less about Robert (whom we barely see in that scene anyway) and more about the state of Courtney's psyche at this point in the story, about her actively repressing her own desire for acceptance and belonging the minute she actually got it for the first time in... ever, probably? So you finish episode 3 thinking: aw, she got over that hurdle, she got her confidence back, yay, things are going to be so much easier from here, she's on a straight-fucking-forward path to success. Tick, done, I'm the best dispatcher/mentor ever.
And then, episode 4 blows up in your face with a big fat: no. We've established the woman has problems, we meant it. Yes, she's earned validation, but she's still in complete denial over the deeply transformative effect this is having on her, because it makes her vulnerable and she hates it. So she will turn to what she knows best: repressing the good it made her feel and self-sabotage to re-establish the familiar status quo of being a no good lowlife, where she feels miserable but safe.
But then all these good feels that are so seismic to her have to go somewhere, have to be expressed somehow, so: hello, sex dream! And now, miss ma'am Courtney is confused on top of everything else, twice as vulnerable, twice as likely to act out - and she does.
I mean it's hilarious because it's so fucking real.
And I was so excited to finally get to grapple with a girl loser character who's dripping with this unholy mixture of insecurity-turned-sexual-desire and absolute negative rizz. It's such a rare portrayal to get for female characters - especially the sexual aspect of it, which in Visi's case felt relatable and mature because it's complicated and coloured by all the other problems she's got going on. Robert is almost irrelevant in this - whether or not you pursue a romance with Visi, it's her internal event, and she has to deal with its deeper meaning one way or another. I just love it, and I want more of it.
I hate how once Ann awakens to her persona, the Kamoshida arc becomes completely about her and Ryuji is pushed to the side. This is, of course, no hate to Ann (I love her) and more a critique of the way the game handles Ryuji as a whole, but I wanna talk about this arc specifically because this is when it is most jarring.
The Kamoshida arc begins with Ryuji and the first few sections are dedicated to Kamoshida's physical abuse towards the volleyball and former track team and therefore representative of the abuse Ryuji personally faced from Kamoshida, but very quickly, less than halfway through the palace, the main theme of it changes from his physical abuse of his students over to his sexual abuse of them which ends up entirely cutting Ryuji out from the arc.
I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing to have two different sections focus on the two different aspects of Kamoshida's abuse, but since the Ryuji's portion is so short to leave enough time in the palace for Ann to join without ruining the flow of it, it makes the time spent on each of them unequal.
I think after Ann joins there is exactly one mention of the abuse Ryuji faced in the library where they find the slave book and that is it. There is nothing even in the palaces design to represent it. There are statues of naked women all over the place, but they couldn't spare one bit of decor to represent his physical abuse? Ryuji doesn't even get a shadow version of himself! He himself doesn't get to mention his side of things much either because all his lines about Kamoshida relate to either Ann or Shiho after Shiho's suicide attempt.
And after defeating Kamoshida's shadow, the focus is completely on Ann. She gets to tell Kamoshida off, she decides whether or not he lives or dies, she gets the big emotional moment and Ryuji gets nothing. When Kamoshida has his change of heart, Ann gets a public apology from him and Ryuji doesn't even get mentioned by name. Actually Ann gets TWO apologies, one from Kamoshida and another from a Mishima and two other students who either knew what had been happening to Ann and kept quiet, or hadn't known but spread rumors about her and treated her unfairly.
Ryuji experienced those same exact things, not being stood up for by people who knew he was being abused and getting turned into a pariah, and even though he's standing literally right next to Ann in that scene, he received nothing. Not even one from Mishima who knew that Ryuji had been trying to help him.
It is insane how much Ryuji is overshadowed in the Kamoshida arc and it pisses me off every single time I replay the game.
Kamoshida was his abuser too.

Trying my best to lower Jerbel shippers by putting out another ship! This is a ship I have handcrafted and I love very much, that I call Maisa! It's Luisa Madrigal x Mabel Tanaka!
"Life is an Ecosystem, and systems rely on eachother. If you don't rely on others, you'll collapse."
"you matter to me. You're my 'ecosystem'" (CRINGE AS HELL BUT I WROTE THIS AFTER 2 PRESENTATIONS AND A TEST SO SPARE ME)
I think he's neat!!! i expected more outpouring love for him....
I'm having thoughts about Courtney's various aliases in Dispatch.
When she was a villain, we know she named herself Invisibitch, right? Descriptive, but not that imaginative of a name; it's her superpower with "bitch" appended. The name tells you she can turn invisible and she's a bitch here to fuck you up, it's very literal and blunt. It strikes me as emblematic of how she feels as a villain: crime is a necessary station for her, it's just what she has to do, but it's not something she puts a lot of effort into. Invisibitch isn't a name like Shroud or Toxic, which give less direct perspective on powers while also creating questions about the motives and goals. Shroud suggests darkness and mystique, Toxic implies danger and fear; as a name, Invisibitch just says "I'm an invisible villain."
But then she goes to SDN, and Blazer gives Courtney the name Invisigal. This is notable firstly because it's a given name, not a chosen one; it's not something Courtney chose for herself, but she chose to accept it. We also know it represents a softening of Courtney's image. Blazer gave it to her as an attempt at rebranding her to appear more as a hero and less as a villain (or as a "bitch"), but I think it also somewhat defangs Courtney; in a bouba vs. kiki kind of way, bitch has a sharper sound than gal does. So as a name, Invisigal is a a step towards Courtney's move away from villainy. Part of me wonders if we might even consider this as one of the first acts of support in her redemption. Another person (Blazer) saw potential in Courtney, and offered her a path to being someone who isn't on guard, who doesn't have to be a villain.
And then there are the nicknames, Visi and Vis. The former by Robert, Blazer, Royd, and Golem, the latter by just Robert. These, in my opinion, are so incredibly noteworthy because they are inversions of her super-name up til this point. Courtney's aliases have centered her invisibility. We know from other aspects of the game that she had a tendency to run and hide when the going gets tough. She's scared of failure so she doesn't commit; she makes herself invisible to protect herself from being seen. People who care about her then amicably give her a nickname which inverts that. They take the "in" out of "invisible." Courtney's friends make her visible, they let her know they see her, that they want to see her. That she doesn't have to hide.
There is so much complexity in the path of Courtney's super-aliases & nicknames, I love this game
My marinler mii's had a kid on Tomadachi life and I was like "haha what if I made him an oc" so I did
The human, Santiago, is the son of admiral Beckett Mariner, and Captain Bradward Boimler. He is basically Cerritos Nepo baby like Mariner. Except unlike his parents he lowkey isn't into all that. And kind of has a complicated relationship with his father
The other three are unnamed bc I made them on a whim yesterday, but the Vulcan usually is the one who leads their missions, and has to put up with their shenanigans. The Klingon is like a mad scientist type, and the Orion is an engineer who specializes in hacking and is an avid online pirate. The three of them cause a lot of havoc in the Cerritos, and the Vulcan lowkey gets involved often too😭🙏.
Late night sketch turned full piece after I remembered the end of season 1 when boimler left for the titan
Been trying to draw more fluid poses so they're my victims
invisimonth 2026!
day 29: dance
this is my depiction of the villain visi route for a s2! visi really thought she would have a free night at the sardine only for robert to be there too oopsie 🤷♀️ they're soulmates ig
Entry two for the yuri olympics! This time with T'lyn and Tendi as that Archie comic hehe
Do you ever just sit there and think about how Visi bought Robert donuts, and how she was already planing to do it before the Grannie's mission was even done (asking his favorite)
and how she sat with him at the bar when the other z-teamers wouldn't, and how she gave him advice on how the team could trust him,
and how she went to watch him try out the prototype, and how she organized the house party for him, and how she rallied the team to find the pulse
Robert may have been The Mentor, but Invisigal was team Robert from day 1
Visi the woman you are
Miss me 😛
