Lately I have had cause to visit Regentās Park. By association, it brought to mind Regent Street, The Regentās Canal, Regency Square in Brighton, and ultimately, that period in English history, between the Georgian and the Victorian, known as REGENCY.
The Regency period, according to Wikipedia, was an era that encompassed ā a time of great social, political and economic change.ā Additionally, war was being waged abroad on various fronts, whilst at home the gap between Upper Class and Lower Class society was widening. This was exacerbated by a concurrent population boom. Simultaneously, advances in communication technology, as exemplified by the Steam Press, increased the possibilities for mass reproduction exponentially, which, in turn,Ā created demand for more and more published content, often driven by a fascination with the lives of the rich, famous and aristocratic. Celebrity culture. It was a fast moving age of haveās and have notās. Sound familiar?
OneĀ of the upsidesĀ of this time however, was the evolution and development of the Neo-classical style of Architecture, as epitomised by the work of John Nash, chief architect to The Prince Regent, after whom this period is named. It was he who was indeed responsible for the Town Planning of London at this time, and, in particular, the various grand terraces around The Regentās Park. In collaboration with fellow architect Decimus Burton, Nash oversaw the creation, in 1820,of 13 Cornwall Terrace, on the southern perimeter road.
The impetus behind all of this new design and construction sprang from The Regentās desire to impose order and aesthetic elegance on a city which had been, for many years, descendingĀ into a sort of shameful HogarthianĀ dystopia Ā of cheek by jowl, insanitary chaos. This,of course, isĀ a familiar story. Civilization has been forever engaged in a struggle for supremacy with the Universeās relentless progression from order to disorder. Entropy. As the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics tells us ,inĀ this world, nothing is permanent. Change is life and life is change.
In Japanese culture, Wabi Sabi is an aesthetic or world view that recognises, among other things, these notions of transience and impermanence. It also connotes a type of modesty, an understated elegance, the beauty of imperfection and patina, as well as the inevitability of gradual decay. Students of Wabi Sabi learn to find the most basicĀ unadorned objects interesting and beautiful and especially if they are flawed or aged.
As it happens,13 Cornwall Terrace is now known as Japan House and is the home of The Daiwa Foundation, which isĀ a locus for academic and cultural activities relating to Japan in Britain. It is a large house on several floors and consists of many rooms, some of which are used as gallery space for the presentation and contemplation of Art. They recently hosted a very beautiful exhibition of the work of the Japanese poet and photographer Gozo Yoshimasu. I was greatly taken by the photography on display, but, equally, was very much diverted by the meditative, peaceful Ā tone of the space that it graced. The rooms were lit naturally by sunlight yet retained a drainedĀ quietude. I could hear nothing. The sparse furniture and fittings there were ā of a certain age.ā It seemed to me to be a perfect example of the aforementioned tension between order and a kind of stoic resistance to order. In every elevation, in every corner, and in every object, I found an imperceptible commitment to deterioration. An indifference to regulation. Close to the ideals of Wabi Sabi, the (solitary) experience was analogous to being in a church or place of prayer. It fostered a slower, oneiric state of mind and encouraged what Brian Eno terms āthe talent to surrenderā by which he means that we should recognise and accept when to relinquish our 'self presentationā , the better to allow ourselves to be transported to 'another placeā. To be taken along. To experience transcendence. To dip into our subconscious, where the rules are different and where we might find the most underused and undervalued parts of ourselves. In the age we live in, IĀ also believe this to beĀ one of the most valuableĀ consequences of viewingā¦The Still Photograph.

Body image
Sadiq Khan's directive to London Transport yesterday to ban 'body image' advertising that depicts attractive , thin and body revealing models is ludicrous. A typical response from the left wing to impose politically correct rules across the whole network . What about film posters are they going to be subject to the same rules? In this day and age of course advertising should represent larger, or whatever the politically correct term is to describe a size 16 person , something ........challenged, another ridiculous term because it implies that they have a fight, cause on their hands to aim for. Or use unattractive, interesting faces or ordinary people. Most people lets face it, like looking at someone beautiful in an advert and like Adele are amazingly beautiful and clearly not a size 10 or 0 whatever that means , in this constantly re-defining culture we live in. I suffered a similar prejudice let's call it an ultimatum, from my credit card facilitator who told me in no uncertain terms that I had to remove all naked or semi-naked photos from my website or they would not permit the banking facility. I pointed out that most fashion magazines were full of beautiful semi naked models and art galleries celebrated the naked body. But they were unmoved and said it came under the heading of pornography. My site is far from pornographic! Same ridiculous attitude that Mr Khan is succumbing to. Whatever happened to our liberal attitude to culture? Are we going to have all our images policed by County Hall in case they offend someone. Do I now have to stand up for thin, attractive people ? Seems an irony as they are de-rigueur in fashion which is a massive employer and a huge contribution to the economy. I love all sizes and shapes let's keep it that way Mr Khan. A Day at the Races.
Went to the Epsom Races for the first time , a sport i have hitherto had no interest in. But having an invitation extended i decided to go out of interest and thought it was amazing. Again i am not particularly drawn to horses. But for the first time i was drawn to their extraordinary beauty, i could see how Eadweard Muybridge studies of horses in motion were of fascination to him. It took me back to my art school days and the power of drawing and photography has on vision.Their legs move in strange sequences. Ā I wished i had my sketch pad with me.
The elegance of the jockeys riding , their tiny elevated frames leaning towards the head of the horse was almost balletic an observation i had never noticed before somehow it was the live experience that made the experience so beautiful which for me is lost in televised racing. The speed at which these beasts run en masse was again so wonderful to behold and over is seconds as they galloped passed our gaze. I was not interested in the betting that seemed incidental to the buzz around. Colossal money was at stake in the breeding it was explained to me and so hardly incidental!
Not being amongst the tail coated ,coiffed and well-heeled Ā champagne drinking paying guests we wandered with the hop polloi who were friendly and good humoured as a result of being slightly tipsy and either celebrating their winnings or laughing at their loses. Essex girls in skimpy tight fitting clothing to display their fake and not so fake tans combined with borderline tranny make-up were great to see, not sure that they were there to witness the horses talent Ā but score iām sure they did.
Children and infantile adults sought out the roaring rides in the fairground that added to the backdrop of bonhomie in the air. Lines of vintage buses bursting with people were sandwiched between the race courses, said to be the the most difficult track in the world because of its undulating, and inclined terrain and strange turns.
What an introduction to a sport i never imagined i would ever express an interest in, and it is all thanks to my great hairdresser friend of thirty years Sid who is a horse-racing fanatic. My ashes are to be spread at the starting line he said to me. I hope that wonāt be soon Sid as i intend to accompany you annually to this marvellous event bringing our own Champagne and picnic as the food on offer, i must say was the only negative to mar this superb event. It was chips , chips and chipsā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.
Charity Shop Blight
Just visited Crouch End Broadway to food shop and visit the bank and was astounded that there is yet another Charity shop opened Barnardos, where the undertakers used to be . There must be between 8-10 there now blighting the landscape. Crouch End used to be full of beautiful independent shops, family-run businesses. One by one these small businesses have been driven out by escalating rents and despicable tactics employed by āchainsā to oust independents, for instance hiding behind what appear to be independent businesses, like Harris and Hoole Coffee shop, several of us thought was a one off until we found out it was set by TescoĀ . There isn't the same criteria for Charities they are given special status, do not pay rates or for their staff or taxes and i assume have preferential status in other areas. There should be a level playing field. In fact small business should be given help to survive. Whatever happened to the concept of our cottage industry ?
We don't all want to fill our homes with other peoples junk. Most of the charity shops are full of old lady tat and as for their window displays one would think one had stepped into a third world country not a sophisticated capital city in the world. Undoubtably one can find "treasures' if you hunt hard enough .I admit to having found only last week a pair of Alexander McQueen shoes that i saw in a window of the RSPCA shop. At the price of Ā£35 probably worn once they were irresistible. But i would be happy to forgo finding these ātreasuresā to have a high street that was a pleasure to walk down. Not one i no longer bother going to because it offends my eyes.
I can't stand the dank smell of unwashed clothes; a general musty aroma greets one on entering the shop. They are hardly inviting. The wonderful Mary Portas at least tried to revitalise and transform the image of charity shops, some of which at least took note. Hers are the only ones i willingly frequent. The merchandise there is way superior, clean and if not new at least well looked-after. This comes at a cost, one i am prepared to pay for. Another underlying problem these Charity shops have permeated is the bargain hunting mentality that they have instilled in us. No one is prepared to full -price for anything. I have been in business for third years and no one apart from third world countries used to bargain for a new garment. Now nearly everyone does.
It would still be better if small business could survive on our high streets instead of Charities, Estate Agents, Hairdressers, Coffee Shops and Pharmacies who make up the majority of the shops in Crouch End. I appreciate Charities have to raise money, but if, like myself, we are driven out of retail/industrial properties to work from home, we can no longer subscribe to charities as we cannot generate sufficient income. I for one have had to cancel my subscriptions to Charities that i supported for many years because of the erratic nature of my income and the fear of not knowing what other hidden taxes may be around the corner.Ā

A friend and myself went to Kings X on Saturday to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the beautiful evening, have a drink and then eat. We walked into The Grain Store Restaurant only to be told it was Reservations only. Although their website says they hold back places for Walk Ins. I looked around to a half empty restaurant and no they couldn't accommodate us. It wasnāt late possibly 8.30. I objected to their surly response when asked why they couldnāt find us a table. Iām sure if i was Madonna or any other celebrity a table would be found.Ā Had the same response from the pub we had just left overlooking the canal. We had left there because the volume of conversation was such that we had to shout at eat other to be heard.
Finally out of desperation as i didnāt want to leave the area we just walked into Vinoteca, which from the outside looked just like a bar . The food there was way superior; one of the best meals i have had in my life and i have eaten at the best Resaturants in London. So won't be returning to the Grain Store ever again and i have sampled their menu and there is no comparison. The Vinoteca chef served better and tastier food and the staff were excellent, though i can't fault the table staff at the Grain Store. But somehow Restaurants need to learn customers come first and training staff is essential in etiquette. My second pet hate: Why do the refuse collectors have to operate simultaneously with the school run and rush hour. Why can't they either collect the rubbish earlier or later in the day when traffic is lighter and not ruin our journeyās either to work or on the school run when haste is of the essence, every week? The Councils really need their heads examined. Glad i didn't vote for mine or for the current Mayor!
