Saif Sword
Dated: 18 - 19th century
Culture: Arab
Medium: steel, silver, wood, brass, velvet
Measurements: overall length: 37in (940mm). Blade length: 31.5in (800mm)
The hilt of the sword is mounted with a large silver pommel cap, and a silver cross guard and collar, with a chain linking the two. The blade is a high quality, polished, European example. It has a single spine fuller, and a copper inlaid ‘dot’ near the hilt.
The original scabbard looks very Indian, and perhaps suggests that this is an Indo-Arab sword. It is covered in green velvet, with a pierced silver suspension loop, and a copper chape with traces of silver.
Sidenotes:
The word “saif” in Arabic is a general name for a curved sword, similar to the word “saber” in English.
However, in many cases, owners and collectors refers by Saif to a specific shape of a sword like the one shown here.
Various blade were employed, ranging from Persian trade to European military blades.
These swords are common in the Arabian Peninsula, more in its southern areas.

European Sword
Dated: circa 1610 - 1625
Medium: iron and steel, chiselled
Measurements: overall length 114.3 cm; width 4.3 cm; weight 1.145 kg
The sword has a semi-swept hilt made up of a flat, rhomboidal pommel, with prominent button, the flat sides roughly chiselled with pairs of nude figures in low relief. The wire-bound grip is of rectangular section, while the quillons are curved alternately upwards and downwards, the former forming the knuckle-guard. They are of flat section expanding at the ends where they are chiselled with masks wearing conventional, plumed head-dresses (one quillon has been broken and repaired by brazing).
There’s a curved branch, forming half of a hilt-arm, projects over the blade which is notched for the finger. The large side-ring with an oval cartouche in the centre is crudely chiselled, like the pommel, on the front side only, the back plain. The blade is of diamond section with a single fuller running to the point and a triple groove at the forte, while the the escutcheon is stamped on the reverse with a side mark.
