out. i’m going to do work on icons.

one day i’ll write here.
malcolm has never killed anyone and it shows.
malcolm hates violence, he hates unnecessary bloodshed and hurting others. he has always relied on quinn to do it and that is one of the reasons the community is so afraid of him. quinn is seen as his right hand, he is the enforcer to the rules malcolm has set. malcolm has never harmed a member of the community. even when they had the old man beaten to the point he couldn’t talk, malcolm only ever comforted him, he only ever shushed him and calmed him, and he felt genuine remorse for what quinn and frank had done. but he still wasn’t the one to show mercy and end his suffering. he doesn’t even watch when quinn slits his throat, but rather turns to watch him bleed out. blood is something malcolm can cope with, he’s fed the Crone enough to know how to handle blood but he still can’t stomach the violence.
i’m a filthy liar, malcolm howe has killed exactly two people and it shows.
while malcolm primarily relies on frank and quinn to do the dirty work, malcolm himself is considered the overseer. the prophet and leader chased by the Crone herself to lead the lambs to slaughter. that doesn’t mean he likes it, it’s a punishment in itself to watch your people die. it’s why purification is so rare. malcolm hates to slaughter the lambs. he protects them from harm. he promised.
but some rules cannot be broken without consequences. malcolm of all people knows this. the punishment wasn’t thought up by human minds, but whisperings from Her. instructions carefully carried out to every specification. quinn was thrilled, and that terrified him.
the first purification was the second time malcolm had ever killed someone, and the first time he really counted it as murder. he had shown hesitation, and anyone who witnessed it could see that in his eyes, how his heart wept for the man who had sold them out and had the guts to come back. how pale the prophet was when he set the flower petal into his skull, or how he hid for two days in the woods, speaking to god.
it was the first time his faith had faltered.
so the Crone whispered back, he did not have to do the act, but he had to bear witness to it, he had to order it, and oversee it every step of the way. he had to watch as they set up the stand, and as the traitor laid upon it. even as they shaved their head.
he’s hesitant because he’s done it. it still makes his stomach turn, twist in knots and flip expectedly. but it was rare, it’s bearable.

Sentenced to death. But for what ? My only crime was to dare to dream of a world in which each waking day we rise equal. Compassion is no crime. But my fate was not to be found in death, my friends. No. Three brothers we became, bonded by our escape. Stowaways, cast into the rough seas. Oh, the taste of the ocean beating down my throat, I shall never forget. But… nor will I… the sweet, sweet sound of her voice, as she beckoned us out of the storm. She, the goddess of this island, who saved us, and who chose my tongue through which to speak. A man who once walked godless, she gifted me her wisdom, entrusted me that I may enrich your minds.
prophet malcolm howe of apostle usually prophesied by jayne bird.
Apostle (2018) | (x)
“Put a god between your enemy and the people, you’ll see. The people won’t falter. Not one bit. Faith binds you. God. Slave. Mine.”
it’s going to rain, the ache in his knee tells him, and he reminds himself to pray for fertile crops. the only sound in the barn the off rhythmic step as he approaches. the prophet’s curiosity is well founded, trespassers on the island are rare, lookouts posted to keep careful eye on the coast. this man’s mysterious appearance leads to one belief : She must have brought him here.
“they weren’t terribly unkind, i hope.” it is a question laced with genuine concern as kind eyes flicker over other’s features. ( if he finds something unsettling there he doesn’t comment. ) malcolm knows he doesn’t have to worry about frank, he isn’t the one to lash out unprovoked. the other howe brother however, is more inclined to violence, and that unsettles him. “quinn is calloused, but he means well.” He offers reassurance and it is clear it’s more for him than for the stranger. kind, hesitant smile tugs at the prophet’s lips. “i have questions if you don’t mind.”

malcolm is extremely dependent on frank and quinn and that’s an important fact.
