Edge Hoboken Fall Schedule for Kids Wrestling: Edge Kids
Coaches Corner: Day one to the NCAA
Guiding a wrestler from their first day to year one is my favorite process in this sport. We are fortunate to have worked with over 500 first day athletes. Through this experience we developed a system unlike any others. We build youth wrestlers confidence and motor skills before emphasizing competition. Competition can deplete confidence if an athlete is not ready, in year 1 we focus on having fun and learning through the sport until they are mature enough to compete. Most wrestling programs stress competition first, this leads to first year burnout and low retention. We specialize in that critical first day and ultra critical first three months into the sport.
“We separate all new wrestlers into our Level 1 program. The focus is on 5-8 year old developmental skills including: listening, motor control, balance, and confidence. I foster curiosity, not stifle it, and encourage individual learning. One must first learn to control themselves, before they are able to master the control of others. 100% of the Level 1 campers from last summer are still wrestling today.” - Coach Jeff
For me, this is the most rewarding time. Working with youth who may never have stayed involved in wrestling, but we are able to guide them along until they can develop at their own rate. This has proved to lead to great success with over 100 New Jersey State Champions, 12 NCAA Titles, and two Olympians under the Edge tutelage. But for me the wins aren’t most rewarding; seeing a wrestler find that college acceptance letter or scholarship offer he always dreamed of is what I cherish most.
This year I failed several of our wrestlers. The recruiting process is a hard one, and through the season I had assumed they were on top of SAT / ACT testing and staying in contact with busy college coaches. Normally I push this, and stay on top of connecting our wrestlers with the right schools. This year we were very busy in house, changing programs around so we can better help students, and I feel I let me guys down. It is a hard place to be as a coach, as they have dedicated thousands of hours, hundreds of days, their lives for this. And I was unable to help them where I excel most. Finding the right fit.
“I am proud of the solutions they have come up with, and know the door for them will be even larger now. They have shown immense maturity in the new career paths they have executed and I am excited to keep working with them to grow their new opportunities, there are bigger doors open for them. As with anything it is time to reset the goal, find a better position, and reach greater heights. Michael and Freddie, I am looking forward to this year for you. Congrats to you both.” - Coach Jeff
From this failure I have grown and am motivated to implement weekly SAT Prep in the loft, more NCAA deadline knowledge and more recruitment process information into the schools, my posts, and our camps. 2016 / 2017 will be a big year for the Edge Kids.
Congrats to our 2016 Graduates and NCAA Signees!
3 tips to Stay fit in Summer
1) Constantly stay hydrated:
You should be consuming 8-10 oz of water to start your morning and immediately before bed. Make your goal to maintain 64 oz of water throughout the day.
2) Have a reason to stay in shape:
Click here to get the full article and Ray’s tips
Weather it be your children, a competition, a 5k or even vanity. A lack of a reason and one weekend BBQ is all you need to fall back to bad habits.
3) Don’t be afraid to eat:
If you feel defeated because you had too many burgers on Sunday, then food wins. Instead, focus on the occasional cheap meal is actually something you may need mentally and physically to stay on your consistent path. Especially if you’ve upped your training and your diet is low in carbs.
For more fitness tips follow: @RayRodFitness or check out his free strength & conditioning class designed for Wrestlers + fighters, it’s in Hoboken on Thursday nights at 8:30pm. You can also check out Larry’s program Monday + Wednesday at 6:30pm. Both are free to current students.
Elmer Recinos, Assistant Coach at Edge Muay Thai Hoboken, won his second career fight by third round TKO. Elmer utilized pressure and control to dominate the bout.
Coach Jeff: Deciding to go from training to taking a fight, what was hardest about making that decision?
Elmer: The hardest was actually believing that I was ready, and if I wasn't that I could GET ready. So much of fighting is mental, and more than being physically fit and durable, I had to believe that I was those things. Cuz It doesn't matter if you can run 5 miles without breaking a sweat, or go 100 rounds sparring, if you think you ain't ready you're gonna gas out.
Coach Jeff: How has your mindset changed since your first fight?
Elmer: I used to be in less control in my life. Even leading up to my first fight I was fucking up, my brain was all over over the place, horrible diet, didn't care about things. Now I'm more mentally sturdy, I'm more aware of the things I can control and accept the things I cant.
Coach Jeff: What was your mindset your first day at edge, your first time stepping in the doors?
Elmer: When I first started at Edge I just desperately wanted to change my life up. I hated who I was. I was coward, a liar, mentally and physically weak. and I wanted something to break the mold. The mold of who I was and how people saw me. At first I came in with a superficial reason. I wanted to lose weight and tell people I fight. I've grown up. Those reasons don't matter to me anymore. My reasons are deeper, and for me.
Coach Jeff: Where have you found the most growth?
Elmer: I found the most growth in my confidence and philosophy. The things that I believed, worried about, suffered over, I don't let those things affect me anymore. Because they don't matter. I don't CHOOSE to suffer anymore. I want to be happy and work everything in my life to be and stay happy. Cuz that's what I hold as most important in my life.the happiness of me, my friends, my family.

Summer Wrestling, had me a blast
Summer, so much going on and yet so little to do is a relief in every kids mind.
I remember it was hard to find practice partners, and even harder to get in on a mat. There was only a select few of us that stayed training when everyone else took off. We just loved what we did.
Today each of us holds a career in what we love and can look back to those days and honestly, summer wrestling was the most enjoyable. A little more fun, low pressure, and a way for us to improve while not worrying about wins and losses or results. Surprisingly, these are the days I remember most. Not the titles and big wins, but great friendships from that summer training.
This Summer we will offer two options for our Edge Kids, first is our 5th year of our Summer Day Camps with Coach Jeff. These are limited to 16 wrestlers per week so make sure to register for the week you want early.
For the first time in 3 years, we are offering a full Summer Season and the same summer wrestling memories I had. My goal is that hopefully it's easier for your kids to find mat time than it was for us. Summer Season will continue with our same 5:30 Wednesday and Thursday times. If your wrestler wants to stay active this summer, I recommend the full season or if they have a busy schedule a 10 pack of classes.
Call Ray at 201-870-0719 to get registered or email me marsh at edgehoboken.com with questions.

Consistency & How to Keep it
You set out with a strong goal: get fit, trim up for summer, win a state title. You even went so far as to find the right resources, the right coaches and a world class training environment to make your dream happen. Then your weekly schedule evolved into something like this...
Week 1: I’m making classes like clockwork. This is great.
Week 2: Sore this week. I think I’ll miss Monday.
Week 3: I should go to Monday’s class, I’m a bit behind since I didn’t go last week. I’ll go tomorrow. Tomorrow...Happy Hour?
Week 4: Man, I can’t believe I only went on Wednesday this week.
....
Week 7: I haven’t trainied much lately, maybe I’m too busy and I should just cancel.
Week 8: Stop Training. Feel defeated.
Has this been you in the past? I understand. It is me, also. It’s all of us. You don’t have an issue with your goals, your availability, or your motivation. Your only mistake was failing to create a plan that kept you accountable. A set schedule of ‘training days.’
A fresh goal can keep you motivated, but over time that motivation can drift. In order to reach your goal we must develop a plan that starts with scheduling specific days and times. Did you know that in sports and fitness there is a 3 month threshold? It is common knowledge that habits form in 21 days, but in the fitness world coaches know if you make it past 3 months you are likely to commit to training for a year or more. Unfortunately, a large percentage of athletes never reach that 3 month mark. Set a training schedule and reach your goal.
If this has been you before, don’t be discouraged. Go see your coach and put together a dedicated training plan (specific days and times) that works with your availability and will keep you checking off goals.
Do not vary from your schedule. Why are college and professional athletes so successful? They are not permitted to miss workouts and their coaches hold them accountable. In order to find success in your Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai or MMA training, you need to schedule appointments that are unbreakable.
Do not vary and you will see results.
