October Writing Challenge

Day 2: Lookalike

a story for @turning-through-the-never‘s writing challenge via my main blog @brillraven

“Push forward! Drive the loyalists back to the concourse! We liberate this square for the resistance!” 

Edhelwen Redsun dug her legs into the sides of her wolfhawk, releasing a trio of arrows who speared the backs of three fleeing Shal’dorei loyalists who fell face-first into the cobbled street. This wasn’t the first time she had unleashed her fury upon other elves. First was at the Sunwell among her own kind, including her own mother. Then it was against the kaldorei as her traveling party encountered their camps dotting the coastline of the Ghostlands. Now it was these new elves, purple-skinned like the kaldorei but with strange glowing tattoos that ran like lines of starlight across their skin. 

She had seen enough war to know not to care about the casualties. War was bloody business, and weakness of body was as intolerable as weakness of mind. Whoever the kaldorei Sentinel was that reinforced her party’s capture of the square knew that as well, and the two had shared a few apprehensive nods of understanding. They knew some civilians would resist. They knew there would be collateral damage, but this was war. It never was fair and never could be fair. 

She was just dismounting her wolfhawk when a breathless scout came running up to her, his tanned face glistening with sweat. “Make this quick, ranger. We must aid the magisters as they disrupt the warding and erect barricades.” She walked with bow in hand, back straight as the sounds of fighting in distant streets and squares bounced off the buildings to her twitching ears like the whispers of agitated children. When she saw the ranger’s wide eyes and fumbling lips she turned to face him, her large presence making up for her small stature in relation to the taller newblood’s. 

“Well? Speak, then, or begone to your business!” She barked, her lip snarling in irritation. She had no time in this delicately timed campaign for any incompetence. 

“Lieutenant...you’ll want to see this...” He said, simply turning and walking toward a large group of what looked like memorial stones with plaques fastened to the front. She at first began to roll her eyes, but a movement of shriveled blue-black flesh stopped her. She walked briskly forward, and as what was in front of her came into clearer focus she felt a violent churn in her stomach. Above these stone pedestals, trapped by invisible warding runes like under a bell jar, were some of the punished Nightfallen resistance, clinging to their sanity as they stared with glowing, soulless eyes towards their liberators. Some few had gone fully Withered, their sense of self gone as they clawed helplessly at the forcefields.

“I need healers and magisters over here!” Edhelwen called out, racing towards the containment cells as she scanned the bleary, delirious eyes of the captives. In one cell she saw a Nightfallen with one long braid draped over her shoulder, only rags covering her emaciated frame. Her large, bug-like eyes stared straight at Edhelwen, and the ranger idly ran her hand along her own long braid, red where the other’s was white. While they could not have been any different, starving prisoner and glorious liberator, Edhelwen knew from personal experience how similar they were. 

At one time she was at that brink. All of her people were. With the light of hope that was the Sunwell snuffed out before her and her kin, they too had been brought to the point this Nightfallen was at, holding on to themselves with their fingertips. She knew that some of Elisande’s loyalists had made pacts with the Legion and had sated their hunger on fel energy. Only recently had her own eyes turned golden from their previous green. She remembered feeding off the fel crystals, of seeing her sister looking at her like she was a monster...

The Lieutenant pressed her hand to the field, watching numbly as the Nightfallen pressed her hand there as well, like the twisted reflection of a dark mirror. As the magisters began to bring the wards down, and as the forcefield melted away, the quivering Nightfallen fell into Edhelwen’s arms. The dried, cracked lips uttered something in whispered Shalassian, and Edhelwen quietly shushed her. She would see these people healed, and was personally resolved now to end Elisande’s fel reign. She wouldn’t see any more made to make the choice she had to. She wouldn’t see any more sisters turned against each other...

TRP Excerpt: Long, straight strands of a particular raven hue contrast with the light pigment of the skin as they adorn the weathered sin'dorei’s features. The defined contours of the elf’s brooding profile are often marred by a furrowed brow and an ever-constant scowl resting upon a set of roughened lips, though such a sight is often left concealed by a dark leather garb of a slight musky odor. The penchant for concealment leaves naught but the piercing glow of two verdant eyes which reflect a steely poise.

This is my oldest character that I’ve had since Wrath. I’ve role-played him near exclusively from Wrath till the end of WoD. He is my most fleshed, developed, and storied character to date and I hope everyone enjoys interacting with him.

I recently decided to brush the dust off since shelving him years back. I am not looking for anything in particular save for getting him more exposure and prompts now that I’ve the urge to dedicate more attention to him. I’ve no long-term plans moving forward with him except for maybe some more fanart, but I am open for suggestions to filling whatever role that is needed. His morality is all shades of grey, as is his loyalty so I highly encourage and welcome any cross-faction RP with him.

A bow. It is the ancestral weapon of all elvenkind, and the one weapon that no other race can match us at. Being a farstrider of Quel’thalas, our archery style works with both the mundane and the arcane, many of our arrows being enchanted with arcane energy, transfigurative powers, and the ability to lay traps when shot. 

Healing magic would be nice to have. All Farstriders are trained in basic first response medicine, including making basic salves, setting broken limbs, and so forth. But every priest, monk, or blood knight with healing knowledge on the field is crucial to a successful campaign. 

There is no room for mercy on a battlefield. When we were all known as the Quel’dorei we believed in such lofty concepts, but I’ve learned since then. There are some enemies for whom death is the only logical punishment. The only enemy worth sparing is one whose will is broken by their defeat, or one who is of more use alive than dead. Needlessly sparing your enemy out of sentiment is a quick way to get yourself killed.
