What a busy semester it has been. Finally finished writing my paper on the VFTGS. Glad we finished watching The Road. I have to say I was very disappointed on how boring this film was. It failed to fulfill the climax of the book. I was disappointed that there were so many parts left out. Also I was not impressed with lack of acting from the child. I totally was expecting some kind of tear jerking dramatic ending from him when hos father died, but this film fell short on many levels. It seemed more like a made for t.v film then a major block buster.
I really enjoyed these blog entries. They are quite therapeutic and allowed for the creative side of me to venture out. I also appreciated Professor Clark's intellectual lectures on Contemporary Literature. Thank You for giving me a better understanding and appreciation for POMO, especially since I probably would have not willingly read The Road on my own, yet I'm glad I did. Hope all of you had an excellent semester. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
THE END
So far i like the movie, but i think i like the book a little more. The book made the boy seem much more dependent on his father and a lot more scared but in the movie the boy’s kinda just like “okay we can go in this house, no big deal”. I think the movie actually differs drastically than the...
I agree. I guess it's true what they say... the book is always better then the movie. I totally thought the haunted cellar seen was not a bit scary compare to the way the book described it. It was gross and a bit intense when the guy was pulling him down the stairs. Also agreed on how the movie is drastically different from the book.

First off I hope everyone I had a great Thanksgiving! But anyways, I enjoyed The Road very much and am looking forward to watching the movie this upcoming week. I knew at some point either the boy or the man had to die, but I thought the author had a very good ending for the book. I’m glad the boy...
Agreed this book was very good. I also had the feeling that someone may die, especially the father considering his condition of deteriorating health. But it was sad to see him die. I did like how McCarthy left the boy in the hands of another family. This allowed the reader to feel warm about the fact that there are other "good guys" in the world.

this has been a crazy busy week with finishing THE ROAD and having a paper to write. I was able to stop and cook our Thanksgiving feast for my blessed family. The ending to this book allowed for the read to come to the conclusion that it didn't matter what had caused the tragedy of the father and sons present reality but that they were still alive and able to survive there day to days with what they can make do.
While reading the last few chapters of the Road I finally will say that I this is my favorite novel in the course thus far. I found the scene where the decapitated newborn baby was roasting on the fire after the mother had just given birth was horrific. Also, finding out that the father ends up...
Agreed this book is pretty horrific. The realization that whether the humans live or die really is not much of a difference. Live sucks if you live and the way to die is horrible also. Wonder if they ever find out what caused this horrific new reality?

So this weeks reading covered yet again another act of cannibalism. This is an act by people that have lost control of there souls and faith in God. So when I was listening to one of my absolute favorite bands Nine Inch Nails. The song *Head Like A Hole* reminded me how the father feels about resorting to the act of cannibalism.
-I'd rather die then give you control......Bow down before the one you serve..you're going to get what you deserve.
The father and the boy are still alive. And although the world around them is dark physically and mentally...spiritually they still have God within them.
Post 11 and a half...lol
This book makes my skin crawl and the hair on my arms stand. I'm really trying to regain the courage to continue reading it..... Apocalyptic anything is totally not my cup of tea. I totally wish there was a Visit from the Goon Squad II......

I read The Road in high school, but I hardly remembered it too much before I started reading it. I knew it was post apocalyptic and very sad, but that’s about it. I didn’t really remember any of the big events. I’m so happy we get to read this book! I’ve also already watched the movie with my high school class, and I must say, it is a pretty good movie to book representation
Unlike you I have never read this book. OMG! So I continued to read this book and all I have to say is NOOOO! I got to the part where they found the estate that looked promising for clothing, food, and such.... but then when the dad found the floor board padlocked.. he had decided that he needed to break it.. big mistake! I was so creep t out by the naked starving people that had become cannibals in the cellar... that I had to put the book down and walk away. Unfortunately, I am not into any apocalyptic themed story lines...nor any kind of survival, war, death, or darkness of ANY kind!... I guess thats why I have never seen the movie either.

THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy is a post-apocalyptic novel about a man and his son. Both without names and both without homes. They live with the fear of human interaction besides their own. The man has a “remember when” to reflect on that gets him through his dreams. Yet, the son was born during this tumultuous time and has no positive memories to reflect on.
Anything apocalyptic has never been intriguing to me. Although, I do appreciate McCarthy’s way of slowly introducing the troubles and obstacles that they may encounter. This book has a lot of biblical references. Their situations can be viewed two ways. One way: is that they are stuck in “hell” and that God has punished or forgotten them. Or two: they have been granted the gift of survival and are left to prove that there is good left in the world.
Unfortunately, at any given time we can turn on the news and see similar events that has left many civilians left with just soot and death around them. They have to fend for themselves and often don’t make it till tomorrow because they too have to face the turmoil of survival. Their lives must seem just as bleak as these two characters, yet they still persevere with the faith of God.
There are so many unanswered questions….1) what has caused all of this turmoil? Earthquakes? Extra-terrestrial invasion? Bombings from other countries? 2) How far is “south” and will they ever reach it? 3) Has this effected all of the world or just parts of their country……? One thing that I’m pretty sure of is- since the narrator seems to be the father and there seems to be no chapters… then they at least have to make it to the end of the book.
It is so interesting to me how Jennifer Egan wrote the book the way she did. There are so many ideas that she used to make it a postmodern work. For example, towards the end of the book she incorporated a 70 page power point. In each chapter she also used different points of views, jumping from...
I totally agree with you. The way the timeline falls is classic POMO on how its jumbled,. Also on how the narrator changes for every chapter. I also particularly like how every character has there own secret lives and issues and how they are all connected in someway, even if they don't realize it....yet as a reader we do. Great book, its like a puzzle.

Aging rock stars make me sad. Just imagining the transition from influential story-sharing world-famous musician to a pathetic wrinkled-up sag of skin with the vocal range of a rock is hard to keep down. I was watching a Led Zeppelin reunion special and it was just hard to watch with Guitarist Jimmy Page looking like Albert Einstein and Vocalist Robert Plant sounding like a cat. The above video is the saddest I’ve ever come across: It’s Axl Rose, former vocalist of Guns n’ Roses, performing “Welcome To The Jungle” at an acoustic benefit concert just a couple years ago. The instrumentation was good for a rock track converted to acoustic, but Axl’s vocals make sound like he’s Mickey Mouse going through puberty. Don’t watch if you’re Guns n’ Roses fan.
EDIT: To save your time, skip to 00:50
Ughhh I totally hear you. Ironically when you started with "aging rock stars" first person that came to mind was Axl Rose! Remember his performance at the MTV awards 2002?! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oz4VqyQASI&list=RD3oz4VqyQASI Or even Madonna...

I really thought Generation X was an interesting story. It isn’t anything like what we have been reading in class. Buck was no Prince Charming. Buck trying to talk the sisters into leaving the asteroid for his personal gain was a really selfish move on his part, because there was only enough oxygen for one person and he was going to use it. There is nothing romantic about that. At least the sister that he did talk into leaving was able to see her world (asteroid) in away that her family or anyone ever had.
Agreed, not my favorites either. I do have to say that it was an alternative to reading about realistic loss. Who knows maybe galactic invasion is not far from us and then we will have to write about our own experiences with extra terrestrial lives.
