so i found an otto schaffer in the atchison, kansas census in 1885, listed as white, male, married, 33 years old, and working as a mill wright
but that contrasts with that newspaper article, cuz it says he was without family
OR
i found this 1875 census thing for an “otho j. shafer” living with what seems to be another family, maybe boarding there? But, age 40, born in washington d.c., a carpenter, and an estate value of 435 dollars
