Poor Boxten...for reasons not even Astro could think of, nightmares were not uncommon for the purple music box. So it was only a matter of time before Astro and his ler tendencies got to him.
Boxten groaned as he sat up in his bed, “not another nightmare…” he thought to himself as he pulled off the covers and stood up.
Deciding to go down to the kitchen and make some tea. He opened his bedroom door and sauntered into the dimly lit hallways of the center.
However Boxten didn’t get too far before being snapped from his tired state by a sudden ominous droning. “What was that?!” He said as he turned around.
Only for his gaze to meet a pitch black hallway. No signs of light, doors, or other Toons. Boxten merely stared into the darkness, the center was always dark at night, but never THIS dark.
He…he couldn’t still be dreaming, could he?
Without warning, a pair of pitch black claws shot out from the darkened hallway in an attempt to grab Boxten! He screamed and started running away before the claws could catch him.
Looking behind him, he saw that the claws were following him down the halls. Boxten’s heart raced as he ran down the seemingly endless expanse of doors.
Or perhaps not-so endless. As Boxten lit up upon seeing the blue door with a crescent moon on it.
Astro's room.
As quickly as he could, Boxten opened the door, ran in, and shut it behind him. He clutched his chest as caught his breath, not taking notice of the world around him until he had fully recollected himself.
Instead of the usual blue walls, surrounding Boxten were blue...skies. Blue skies adorned with twinkling stars. And the floor was a lot softer than it usually was, clouds...white ones.
If the shadow arms weren't enough of a sign, he was certainly still dreaming now.
And who'd one expect to see in a dream than Astro? Who was just a short distance away from Boxten, just sitting on the fluffy clouds.
"Ah! Sorry Astro! I-I should've knocked..." said a panicked Boxten.
"Oh no, it's fine. I was expecting you..." responded Astro, who then summoned a pillow made of clouds. "Come, lay beside me. You look tense..."
Boxten walked over to Astro and laid down on his lap, placing his head onto the fluffiest pillow he'd ever felt.
"Another nightmare..." Said Astro as placed a glowing blue hand on Boxten's tummy.
"Yeah..." Boxten said solemnly as a tear trickled down his face. If only he could stop these nightmares, and stop taking up Astro's time... "I'm sorry..."
"It's okay...It's not your fault..." Astro replied, wiping the tear from Boxten's cheek.
"I'm here now, there's no need to cry..." Astro gently tapped the fingers of the blue hand on Boxten's side. Which produced a couple giggles from the purple music box...And a couple notes of music too.
Astro gasped at the sound of Boxten's laughter induced melody. "Oh my, that was such a lovely tune~" Astro began to tap even more on Boxten's sides, this time with two magic hands.
"I'd love to listen to it more~"
"Hahaha Ahahastro!" Boxten giggled, this time a bit louder. Which only furthered the music box to play his soothing melody.
"See? The nightmare is far behind you now. Just you, me, and your joyous song." Cooed Astro as he moved up to Boxten's ribs, playing them like a piano.
"Ihihitt thehe-eek!les!" responded Boxten. Who could only scrunch himself up as Astro tickled him. Normally he'd protest like Dandy did, but these tickles were just what he needed.
"That's the idea, Boxten~" Astro playfully teased. He then stopped for a moment and gave a little "Uh oh..."
"Huh-?! Is something wrong?" Boxten said worryingly as the song stopped.
"It looks like the piano broke...I guess I must switch to the guitar." replied Astro, and he began to lightly scribble his fingers on Boxten's tummy like he was strumming a guitar.
"Oho! Gohoohoohoodness!" giggled Boxten as the melody from Boxten's head resumed playing.
Astro just continued to smile as Boxten snickered "Perhaps I should add some lyrics..." the moon murmured.
And so, Astro began to sing a lullaby has he gently strummed his "guitar"
"Days seem sometimes as if they'll never end
Sun digs its heels to taunt you
But after sunlit days, one thing stays the same
Rises the moon"
Days fade into a watercolor blur
Memories swim and haunt you
But look into the lake, shimmering like smoke
Rises the moon"
"Oh-oh, close your weary eyes
I promise you that soon the autumn comes
To darken fading summer skies
Breathe, breathe, breathe"
Even while Boxten was still laughing, he could see himself growing calmer at Astro's vocals, which was interwoven with the melody come from the music box's head, and the backing vocal of his giggles.
"Days pull you down just like a sinking ship
Floating is getting harder
But tread the water, child, and know that meanwhile
Rises the moon
Days pull you up just like a daffodil
Uprooted from its garden
They'll tell you what you owe, but know even so
Rises the moon
You'll be visited by sleep
I promise you that soon the autumn comes
To steal away each dream you keep
Breathe, breathe, breathe"
With the last lyric sung, Astro ceased his strumming, and by extension; Boxten's tunes and laughter. Boxten gave a yawn shortly after catching his breath, ready to fall asleep once more.
Astro smiled once again as he made a blanket of clouds to drape over the music box, putting him down onto the soft clouds as he got up and gave Boxten a gentle pat on the head.
"Sweet Dreams~" he whispered before disappearing into the starry night sky, as Boxten closed his eyes and let the moonlight shower him in only the sweetest of slumber.
