Filippo Planzone, 'il Siciliano' (1610 – 1636), The "Caged Horse", 1624. The sculpture is a masterpiece of carving, crafted from a single piece of ivory. Planzone was a self-taught artist of exceptional talent, becoming an unsurpassed master of coral, ivory, and wood, considered one of the greatest exponents of 17th-century micro-sculpture. He died at just 26 in Genoa, likely of the plague, interrupting the career of one of the greatest virtuosos of his time.
