Aztec sculpture (volcanic stone with pigment; 66 cm [26 in] high x 43.8 cm [17.2 in] wide x 43.2 cm [17 in] thick) by an unknown artist of the 15th or early 16th century, depicting the malevolent supernatural being known as Cihuateotl ("Divine Woman"; pl. = Cihuateteo). A Cihuateotl came into being when an Aztec woman died in childbirth. The Cihuateteo collectively accompanied the sun from midday to dusk, in an inversion of the deceased male warriors who guided the sun through the night toward dawn. The figure here, wearing a skirt and knotted belt, holds out her taloned hands in a threatening posture.
