Ascending the thrown after the passing of Pharaoh Merenre I, Pepi II was only six years old when he started his long reign over Ancient Egypt. He was also the third last ruler during the sixth dynasty, the dynasty that marked the end of the Old Kingdom.
Although the sixth dynasty came to end two pharaohs after Pepi II, it is said that it was actually during Pepi II’s reign that the Old Kingdom started to decline.
Because mummification was such an expensive process, only the wealthy were able to mummify their pets. Amongst those able to afford to were Pharaohs, Nobles and wealthy citizens.
Cleopatra was the last reigning Pharaoh of Egypt. She both lived and ruled from her palace in Alexandria, and it is because of this that although neither her or Mark Antony’s resting place has been found yet it must lie somewhere in Alexandria.
Cleopatra’s palace, amongst other buildings, currently lies on the seabed in Alexandria’s harbour.
The Battle of Pelusium (343 BC) saw Nectanebo II defeated by Artaxerxes when Artaxerxes entered Memphis and installed a satrap (a provincial governor, who acted as the ruler of Egypt under Persian rule).
This caused not only for Nectanebo II to flee and seek asylum in Nubia, but saw him as the third and last Pharaoh of the Thirteenth Dynasty as well as the last native ruler of Ancient Egypt. After his defeat, Persia ruled over Egypt for eleven years (343 - 332 BC), until they themselves were overpowered by Alexander the Great in 332BC starting the three hundred and two years of Greek/Roman rule.
