known as the children of the sea are often blessed with the abilities to remain in or out of water. syrens have existed long before vaympires and weyrwolves, but only introduced themselves to further their safety. Their love for the sea is eternal only much of the time they find staying on land is safer than the creatures that hide beneath the waves. Syrens can form a tail a few moments after reaching the water with the power to also remain without them. Many syrens are afraid to reveal their species as by popular demand of dark magic their scales can be used for strong potions.
the news are spread in the kingdom like fire spreads in a wooden construction, and within hours, the whole population of the north atlantic ocean has heard of the disappearance of eros. and with the news, rumors are also spreading wildly: they say he has run away, left the ocean to live in the surface; they say he fell in love with a human, had a fight with the queen, or maybe couldn’t handle the life as royalty. assumptions are made about his character, assumptions are made about his loyalty to the crown, but the reality is a lot more serious than that.
eros knows too much. he knows things that he shouldn’t know and how does he know them? simply because part of his family is involved in the mess — bribes, corruption, greed, people doing anything they can to always be on top; things he can’t agree with, and that bothers the ones that are on higher ranks than himself. and surprisingly, he is not the first syren who doesn’t agree with the monarchy to disappear.
he is forty-six years old when it happens, and he can’t remember exactly how it happened — all the syren can recall is that he was near the corals, watching clownfish swim through their anemones and sometimes through his hair, as he studies some of the sea plants growing around the colony. he’s so focused and distracted he doesn’t see the strangers approaching him, he doesn’t hear them, he doesn’t feel the sudden vibrations in the water… and when he least expects, there’s a fishing net around his body. he freaks out, his hands immediately grab the strings around him in attempts of tearing it apart, but he falls unconscious at some point. he doesn’t know why, he doesn’t know how, but when he wakes up, eros is not in the same place anymore — he is not himself anymore. he looks around and all he sees is darkness, all he feels is cold and fear as he presses his back against the glass surface that keeps him secluded into the small provisional aquarium. it’s in that moment he notices something is missing: his family bracelet, something he hasn’t taken off his wrist in years and now is gone — he believes it was probably stolen by one of the humans that caught him.
in the next day, he meets people he wishes he would have never met. they turn the lights on and the brightness almost blinds him momentarily. he closes his eyes tight and takes a few seconds to get used to the atmosphere, but he presses himself further into the wall of glass behind him when he sees the strangers walking towards his cell. the woman wears some strange type of painting on her face, her hair is unnaturally yellow and eros swears he has never seen anything like that before. the man looks at the syren with an odd grin, one which makes eros’ feel sick in his stomach. the man struggles, but he manages to take the syren out of the tank, despite eros’ attempts to fight back and get away from the man’s grasp. he uses some sort of long weapon to intimidate the boy, sometimes pressing its sharp end on the surface of eros’ skin to inflict pain. he doesn’t fight back anymore after he gets a few bruises on his arms and shoulders. eventually, they sit him on a chair and the man has to make sure the boy won’t try to escape by tying him still, so the woman can do her work — she touches his hair a whole lot, applies some things to his head and eros can’t help but sneeze every now and then, the strong scents irritating his nose and eyes.
when the strangers are done, they take the syren to an open space, outside of the room where the boy has been locked in for almost two days now. eros almost feels happy to see the sunlight again, he almost feels thankful for being able to feel the fresh air against his cheeks one more time, and he almost forgets about the burning sensation that he feels on his scalp. they finally release him, and the syren smiles bright when he sees the huge amount of water right in front of him, he doesn’t hesitate to jump into the blue immensity — though, it doesn’t feel right… it doesn’t feel like home. he swims for a couple of seconds, takes a look around underwater and frowns, it doesn’t look like home. it’s only when he swims back to the surface, when he looks at his reflection on the water, that he notices what the strangers have done to him: they took the color out of his hair, and he touches the now silver strands in disbelief. his eyes tear up, but he feels like there’s something blocking his throat. it is not home.
“hey, boy! go back into the water and swim.” he hears the man yell at him, and he can’t help but look at the strangers with big and teary eyes. “smile and wave for the children.”
eros has never been so confused and scared before, and he can’t stop touching his now discolored hair. the tears run down his red cheeks and he can’t stop sobbing, but he does sink back into the water with his arms wrapped around himself and his tail curled around his body. he cries and every little sea creature into the aquarium can hear him, some of them swim towards him, others just stare as if they know exactly what he’s going through — because they do. he hides behind a rock the entire day, he refuses to eat whatever the strangers try to feed him, and the fishes are his only company. the children? he doesn’t look at them not even once, despite the order the odd man gave him.
you may be asking yourself: why didn’t he fight back harder, right? why didn’t he use his special abilities to fool those humans and get the fuck out of there? but the explanation is pretty simple: he doesn’t know he can do it. eros is someone who has never had to fight for anything in his life. as a part of the royalty, he always got everything he wanted given to him, he had everything and everyone on the palms of his hands and never had to fight for anything he wanted, neither had an example to follow. he doesn’t know the physical powers he has, he doesn’t know his own potential to escape — not yet.
but one threat is all it takes for him to finally follow orders: “do as i say or else you’re never swimming again, boy. i’ll let the sunlight dehydrate you and destroy all your scales.” and on that day, eros swims out of his hideout. he swims around the aquarium and a crowd of humans gathers around the gigantic glass tank. he finally sees the children, as they press their little hands to the glass and look at him with big shining eyes… they have never seen a syren before, and eros forces a smile on his face — but all he wants to do is go back behind his rock and cry. his eyes are full of tears again and they get mixed in with the water of the tank, which isn’t a bad thing once he’s sure the man would be angry if eros cried in front of his visitors.
the other sea creatures, eros’ ‘cellmates’, they swim towards him in an attempt to make him feel more comfortable, which doesn’t happen… but it doesn’t stop him from swimming with his new friends. there isn’t a smile on his face as it usually would if he was in the ocean, but he still looks graceful and the humans still fall for his charms.
they love him. the children call him the blue angel.
months and more months pass, and eros is never happy or used to what he does — he loves swimming, but he hates doing it for humans to watch. he misses swimming into the immensity of the ocean. the fishes he spends time with advise him to accept his fate, they tell him to go with the plans the humans have for them, but the syren refuses to do it. he knows his people, his family, his kingdom is looking for him. of course they sent people to look after him. he knows they miss him just as much as he misses them, he knows he doesn’t belong in that aquarium, and for that reason, he comes up with a plan to escape.
one night, after the aquarium closes, he starts singing to catch someone’s attention — he knows a syren’s beauty has the power to lure people, it’s supposed to attract sailors and fishermen, but eros attracts a security guard. he swims by the edge of the giant tank and smiles when his blue eyes finally meet the man’s, who returns his smile and approaches the edge of the aquarium with the innocence of a child. eros touches the guard’s cheeks with the delicacy of a lover, but with the intentions of a rival… when the man least expects, when he thinks the beautiful and dreamy boy is gonna gift him with a kiss, the syren grabs the man by the hair and pulls him underwater. he stares right into the guard’s eyes as he suffocates, drowning in eros’ hands.
it is the first time the boy kills someone, and he has decided it is also the last. he feels nauseous.
but eventually, eros gets out of the water once the corpse sinks into the aquarium, and for the first time in years, he walks on two legs. he looks down at the tank of water and says goodbye to his friends, his cellmates, and walks out of the room where the tank was located. with the agility of his species, the boy manages to walk past most of the other security guards, sometimes with the help of his syren abilities such as making his voice sound differently to order a guard to walk away, and he’s strong enough to jump past the gates that keep the building — and that’s when one of the guards spots him.
eros looks back at the man and his eyes widen, his heart beats faster and he doesn’t hesitate to look back forward and run. he runs as fast as he can because he knows his life depends on it, and totally ignores the sudden and acute pain that hits his leg after he hears a loud noise, too desperate to find the coast to care. he’s surprised nobody goes after him, but he doesn’t stop running not even when he sees the sea right in front of him… if anything, the sight of home only makes him run faster — if that’s even possible, once the fatigue starts to weaken him. his body aches for the ocean.
he only slows down when his feet touch the water, and he only allows himself to finally sink into the sea when it reaches his waist. he dips in, and the water embraces his body like a mother would embrace her lost child. he finally feels home again. he swims, and swims, and swims until he’s deep enough to just stop… he lets the movements of the water carry him, and his body curls up around itself as he cries, cries like a child. his tears get mixed with the water of the ocean and freedom welcomes him with a shoal of small fishes surrounding him, bringing comfort to the boy.
later on, he notices the pain on his leg was from a scratch shot, which doesn’t take long to heal, as he now takes the form of a syren again and goes back to swimming. he swims back to the north atlantic, traveling back to his kingdom, happy to finally be going back home. but he is shocked when he hears that his family has given up looking for him.
“they looked for eros for around three days, but eventually the queen assumed that he was dead for lack of evidence and made it official.” a citizen tells him, and that breaks eros’ heart… he can’t believe they gave up on trying to find him, he can’t believe he is dead for his family. he can’t believe they didn’t send someone after him — they left him to die, they left him.
he’s hurt, he’s disappointed, and that’s how he ends up in south dakota. he crosses the ocean, he swims to the coast of north america and uses his syren abilities to sneak his way into the usa, and pass through many states before he reaches his destination — he’s heard about south dakota before, he’s heard about syrens that have traveled to the state and made their lives there. he wants to do the same. right now, eros lives in dell rapids, on the surroundings of the lake vernon, but doesn’t have his own home or a job yet. he wants a new life for himself, he wants to get over the fact that his family totally gave up on him, and more than anything else, he wants to enjoy his freedom again.
✗ CASPIAN MOON - they were best friends once, but now eros carries deep anger and resentment towards caspian. he expected his so-called best friend to try to do something about his disappearance, and he believes with ever fiber of his body that caspian didn’t even try to find him — he believes caspian just accepted whatever bullshit the queen said after he went missing. but eros is wrong and it’s gonna take time for him to accept it.
✗ IM DOYOON - doyoon is the first person to actually help eros ever since he got in south dakota, and eros truly trusts the vaympire — he actually feels the safest when he’s with doyoon but he won’t admit it if you ask him.
✗ HUMAN POPULATION - he hates you all.
His face claim is BYUN BAEK-HYUN and he’s played by MOON.
