The way the Samurai wore their katana was historically a sign of how they felt in the place they were. All of them wielded the katana with their right hand - so if they felt threatened or on alert, they would hold their katana on their left side so they could unsheath it faster with their right hand. If they felt safe or relaxed, they would hold it on their right side because there was no need to take it out of its sheath.

In the Hashira Meeting when Sanemi threatens to attack Giyuu, Giyuu still holds his katana on his right side even after Sanemi yells at him. He gave no fucks.
