This evening on the subway, a man standing not very far from me started punching the roof of the train car. It seems he was late for something, and was angry about that. "DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MANY STOPS 'TIL UTICA?!" He bellowed. No one responded. "Y'all don't speak English?!" Finally, another man answered. "It's three stops after Franklin." I was terrified. I'm 5'9 and 130 pounds. My scrawny arms look like uncooked spaghetti. I'm anemic and start wheezing after walking up one, maybe two flights of stairs if I'm feeling like a bad bitch. Should that man have directed his anger at me (I was the person nearest him), it could have been really bad. Obviously, that man didn't hit me or anyone else, but his behavior was appalling and scary. And also, not entirely unexpected. Men's anger is often expressed outwardly, even as they are the cause of their own problems. I was looking at him, wondering how someone could think it appropriate to be angry for some private reason and express that so aggressively in public. But it happens so frequently. As women do their very best not to take up space, men so often treat public spaces like their own. Women aren't socialized that way. I've never been taught to make my anger everyone else's problem like that. I've been late a lot. Shit, I'm late right now. But I would never punch the roof of a train car because I was mad about being late and then demand help from that train car full of people I hadn't the self awareness to realize I'd just scared the shit out of. I'd never get angry enough to punch the roof of a train car, or punch holes in walls, shoot up a school or a mall. That's man shit. Obviously generalizations abound in what I'm writing #notallmen #realmendonthitwomen #imasafegunowner blah blah blah. But I really wish more men would take time to consider how they perform anger, and how terrifying it can be for those of us just trying to be a woman and safe in public.
