STOP THE PRESSES, CONNOR MCDAVID OWNS A BELT?!
remember when buffalo made a big deal about the oilers “cheating” during the draft lottery
remember when buffalo made a big deal about how they deserved mcdavid even though they were getting eichel
remember when the nhl media dismissed jack eichel in his own interviews
remember when the nhl always deferred to connor mcdavid during almost every question when they had interviews together
remember all the times jack eichel just stood there listening to people fawn over connor when he was right next to him, no one even acknowledging him.
remember when jack eichel was told in a board room meeting by a bunch of grown men (the sabres) that they didn’t want him but he was what they got and he stared them down and said “I think you did win the lottery.”
remember all the times jack eichel was pushed aside, forgotten about, disrespected to his face, treated like trash as a teenager, bullied by cities of people as a teenager. remember all those times because he just scored his 100th point in the NHL in 127 games and the media is completely brushing it off. all he did to deserve any of this was dare to be the same age as connor mcdavid. but apparently that’s enough.
2015. buffalo was a city tired of losing; finished bottom of the standings for the second year in a row, lost the draft lottery for the second year in a row. and jack was an angry teenager, so desperate to prove himself it was all consuming. it wasn’t a recipe for an auspicious beginning.
it’s been four years now since that fateful 2015 lottery, draft day, and subsequent events, (and two years since this post) and i think it’s time for an update; we’ve all done some growing up since then — though that isn’t to discredit any of the things above, because they are all, sadly, true.
the city embracing jack and watching jack mature and grow into himself over the past four seasons has been one of the few joys as a sabres fan. he’s grown from the boy who’d give sulky and clipped answers after bad games, to maturing emotionally to say what he’s thinking but not take it out unfairly on others. they waited to give him the captaincy, and when they finally did: there was no doubt he was ready ( and his teammates certainly agreed ).
jack eichel went from the humiliation of signing connor mcdavid sabres jerseys to having arenas full of fans wearing his name and number, to being one of the very reasons the arena still filled despite the team sucking. he is the face of the franchise, the heart of the team, and the soul of the city. he’s wound his roots deep into the city and its people, and it’s welcomed him with open arms. love is about compromise and understanding. (and read that article, it’s really good)
and above all, he’s learned he can’t be anyone but himself: the best version of jack eichel, not connor mcdavid, not auston matthews, jack eichel. jack will probably never truly shirk the shadows of his comparisons (connor mcdavid, auston matthews, and so many other names media rotates out), such is the reality of sports media and fans, but he is not unloved. his team loves him. his city loves him. his fans love him. sometimes, that’s enough.

Jack Eichel: alright, listen up you little shits.
Jack Eichel: not you, jeff. you’re an angel and we’re thrilled to have you here.
Kailer: Is that a hickey?
Connor, covering his neck immediately: What? No! It's just a... mosquito bite!
Leon [walking in]: Hey guys.
Darnell: Hello mosquito.
People are really out here trying to police fans on how to feel when their favorite player is traded. PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO BE UPSET. YOU'RE ALLOWED TO GET EMOTIONAL ABOUT SPORTS.
