Just started reading Sherlock Holmes and all the adaptations are wrong. This man is a delight. He gets excited about hemoglobin and is ecstatic at the thought of Watson as a roommate. He purposefully forgets how the solar system works so he has more room in his brain for crime. He shows Watson the dirt stains on his trousers and he can tell what part of London they come from based on color and consistency. (As far as i can tell Watson didn't ask, Sherlock just gets back from walks and tells Watson about the stains unprompted.) The text specifically says "Holmes was certainly not a difficult man to live with." Why does every adaptation make him unpleasant and rude, he's literally just eccentric. He's such a goober, I love him.
Thank you!
I assumed he was written be a total asshole because that’s the only representation I’ve seen, too. It wasn’t until I took a class on detective fiction that I realized just how cool Holmes and Watson are in different ways and how well they work together!
Just, all of this - and also, most adaptations remove a lot of the cultural context behind his cases.
In a lot of the stories (like Adventure of the Copper Beeches) Holmes takes a case from people who would otherwise be ignored by the society of Victorian Britain at that time - unmarried women, poorer or lower-class people, etc. These are people who would've been brushed off by the police, had their concerns minimised and ignored - and Holmes is the person to comfort them, listen to them, and help them.
He also makes a habit of deciding that someone doesn't deserve the punishment they'd get for a crime, and only providing the police with the evidence to exonerate their innocent suspect, hiding the fact that he knows who the real criminal is. This is a man who lets a murderer go because the man he killed was a domestic abuser.
At one point, he says 'I had rather play tricks with the laws of England than with my own conscience', which was a pretty radical statement for a popular novel of the time.
Holmes is an eccentric, neurodivergent character - who is also kind and caring and fundamentally good. He's one of my favourite characters in all of literature. And nearly every single fucking adaptation ruins that in favour of making him an asshole.
homeless trans woman needs financial help being alive
hi everyone it's me again. ive been homeless for a year and two months, and i'm working really hard to resolve that issue
currently i am living in squalour in the shittiest hotel i've ever seen. the floor is sticky with unsealed paint, the good toilet has been out of order for a week, and while i'm eating slightly more than before due to the success of this fundraiser so far, the food selection in the area is still pretty small.
i am currently waiting on an appointment with the police in two weeks to get my immigration papers, so for the time being i'm stuck in this expensive city. once i have my papers i will have healthcare and other human rights for the first time in nearly a decade.
i want to raise another $400 this month towards getting myself into an actual apartment once i can leave this city.

Ok so I've done some cursory looking over hdg and it seems like it would like, 99% be my thing except for the caked in assumptions regarding consent.
If benevolent plant beings showed up from space and said "We're here to free you from capitalism and also do some weird kink stuff with you if you're into that" I would not need to be mindbroken about it. I would be like "Can you maybe also do some weird body horror stuff to me please" and they'd be like "Yeah and we're also gonna keep you as a pet" and I'd say "Yippee!"
If there's like, a bunch of stories about enthusiastic consent in the setting it would become my favorite thing I think, but im not seeing any reference to stories like that so far in my research.
No, I don't know if there's any specific stories like that. There must be a couple (there's nearly 1000 stories on AO3 alone!), but I've not seen them. Any other HDG readers can recommend any?
But yeah. HDG is firmly in a dubcon hypnosis era: it's usually about subs going "no I don't want this!" and they eventually get convinced (possibly with mind control! ) that they're actually denying their feelings and they DO want this.
I can totally see why that kind of consent situation wouldn't be for everyone! But it's a bit baked into the setting, so I don't know how much HDG you'll he able to find that doesn't have it.
Best of luck, and I totally understand if you just don't enjoy HDG because of the consent issues. It's not for everyone.
For what it's worth, while I personally don't have a problem with reading the dubcon, it is a bit annoying to me, as someone who would similarly just dive into being a plant-mommy's pet. An HDG protagonist will be all "damn you freaky xenos! Stop trying to give me the body I always wanted and fixing everything about my life and trying to give me sexy plant cuddles with fun drugs!"
And I'm like... Sis, stop complaining. Embrace being a pet and enjoy. This is everything I wanted.
(I hope I don't get evicted from the HDG fandom for my heresy)
It is difficult to get a story which is truly consensual in the HDG setting - even the fluffiest story where all the characters are upfront about their needs and boundaries is still within the greater context of the Compact, a society built for the purpose of a) Caring for all the cute little xenosophonts of the universe, and b) Guide a significant number of them to a happy place in an affini's vines as their personal pet. You cannot discount the immense amount of soft social power an affini has in Compact society and the pressures an independent might find themselves under (consciously or unconsciously) when interacting with an affini, to say nothing of the affini hypnotics and other mind control they bake into every facet of their being and the day-to-day life of the species under their care.
That said - if looking for stories which are more on the "embracing life as a pet", here are some personal recommendations:
Petals and Vines is a romcom which takes the formula of ex-rebel being saved from dying in space and turns it into a cute romance.
Pain Relief and Other Pleasures is a cute pet rescue one-shot which is one of my comfort stories I go back to when I'm having a bad pain flareup.
Reading the Leaves is probably my favorite one-shot about a sophont and affini falling in love over tea.
And there's a lot more stories which fall under that general umbrella, but these are just the ones which come to mind off the top of my head.
Truly consensual stuff in HDG where the human is the one INITIATING the relationship are pretty hard to come by just because of the nature of the setting, but in addition to VERY STRONGLY SECONDING the above recommendation for Petals and Vines, I would add a few other stories in which, even though the human(s) don't jump headlong into domestication at first, they very much come to realize that they want it without in any way being forced.
I'm arranging these from most to least consensual, but I would argue that nobody is forced or coerced in any of them.
A Normal Grocery Run During Which No Domestication Occurs by SapphicSounds is a short and sweet story in which a hungry human whose city is only partly conquered by the Affini crosses the border over the promise of food. What follows is an ADORABLE lesbian grocery date in which she learns just how much BETTER the Affini-run territory is, and she ends up deciding she would rather be there, and her Affini tour guide is happy to have her.
Good Sensory by Sheepwave is a newer story that's only 3 chapters in currently, but is EXTREMELY cute. An ace autistic independent human has a bit of trouble being around most Affini, who tend to be overly flirty and touchy, and she has a lot of issues with the textures of their vines. An ace autistic Affini takes an interest in her and decides to be very direct and upfront about her interest, and goes out of her way to accommodate the human's texture and other sensitivities. The Affini is definitely trying to domesticate her, but is honest about that and puts a lot of effort into doing so in a way that the human is okay with. It's a very sweet story.
This one is a little closer to being dubious, but I would argue that the protagonist actively CHOOSES what happens to her (even though she likely WOULD have been forced into it if she hadn't). Inosculate by SapphicSounds is the story of a rebel pilot going alone on a doomed rescue mission to try to save her girlfriend from the Affini. Turns out her girlfriend was willingly domesticated 10 days ago. The Protagonist makes a couple of mistakes along the way to try to be reunited with her, and then finds that her girlfriend is not only safe and happier, but also very clearly BETTER OFF because of this. So over the course of a few days she decides that she actually kinda wants this too. She's never forced, but she IS a little bit teased into asking for things. The Affini refuses to do anything to her UNTIL she asks for it explicitly. Also, when she DOES agree to it, some REALLY HOT STUFF HAPPENS.
This last one is definitely the MOST dubious of these stories, because technically some things start happening to the protagonist before she knows about it, but she realizes VERY QUICKLY that she is extremely into it, and it's very clear that she's GOING to ask to be domesticated. The Affini figures this out the same time the human does, but decides to NOT let it happen too soon, because she'd rather have a bit of fun first. AT NO POINT IN THE STORY IS THE PROTAGONIST NOT OKAY WITH THAT'S HAPPENING TO HER, although whether some of it can be said to be truly consensual is complicated, and to be fair the things that DO happen to her are FAIRLY INTENSE if they're kinks you're not into (especially exhibition and humiliation, she LOVES to be embarrassed). The story is called Through The Looking Glass by PyxxieStyxx and TheMothCourt, and it is my second favorite story in the setting. It's well written, fantastically structured, ties a lot of things together really well (the title works on AT LEAST THREE LEVELS), and is both incredibly cute and very, very hot. It also features some of the best hypnosis specifically that I've seen in the setting so far. Also it's got ENORMOUS transition vibes and a protag who realizes very quickly that she is a much, much bigger lesbian than she thought.
As a HEAVY ASTERISK honorable mention, Abscission by Fluxom features some pretty heavy trauma and psychological issues. The protagonist, Autumn, begins the story experiencing intense anxiety, psychosis, intrusive thoughts, and paranoia (she gets better). She is in an unusual position, too: while she was on a rebel ship, she's the one who signals its location to the Affini, which means she was also a willing surrender.
The story has a major turning point where it becomes less about Autumn recovering enough to be granted full independence and where the medical care she requires is going to take a lot more time. She's also in an odd position when it comes to her Affini ward. FRANKLY, AUTUMN IS A MUCH MORE ENTHUSIASTIC PARTICIPANT IN HER DOMESTICATION THAN THE AFFINI RESPONSIBLE FOR HER IS. She is given repeated opportunities to slow down or back out and she STALWARTLY INSISTS that she's enthusiastically consenting every single time. This is also one of the most foundational works in the entire setting and establishes a HUGE amount of its overall mechanics and vibes.
It's sometimes said that HDG is as much the ABSCISSION setting as the HDG setting. It's THAT important to the setting as it now exists. (And having read it, I absolutely agree.)
The reason it's a heavy asterisk, however, is that it's VERY INTENSE. While the stuff that happens with Autumn is CONSENSUAL, it is also NOT ALWAYS FLUFFY if that's the vibe you're looking for. Abscission kind of has a bit of everything: good fluff, lots of trauma, heavy angst, VERY INTENSE MEDICAL AND S&M KINK, and a good story.
The very early chapters of the story are pretty rough, and then it calms down a lot for a bit, and then there's a HUGE TURNING POINT in the story where things get REALLY INTENSE again, but open up the opportunity for some good fluff with another human. Later on it features a lot of Sadomasochism in particular. Again, Autumn is frankly MORE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT IT than her Affini. She doesn't decide that this is what she wants right away, but she ALSO isn't forced into it, and as soon as she does want it she is very, very, VERY enthusiastic in her consent.
Also, reading Abscission means you get to meet Dawn.
Trust me, that's so worth it.
We're a little surprised that people here say they don't know of many stories where the protagonist fully consents to or asks to be domesticated, when the most famous story in the setting is an example of that!
Dog of War is a story about a rebel soldier who commandeers an entire ship for the express purpose of surrendering themselves and the entire rest of the crew with them. While it does involve characters who are non-consensually domesticated, the situation with the protagonist is very much not the case. Behind the scenes, the affini taking care of them as a warden and the captain have agreed that they will vote for domestication at the protagonist's trial, and that this might have been a textbook domestication case, 'Beckett's' amiable nature and request to receive a shot at independence makes them believe that letting them realize, over time, that they do prefer being a floret, would be best.
There are examples of manipulation throughout the rest of the story, and the usual "teasing out a sub's desires despite their protests", but it's so, very, very, VERY light compared to most other stories in the setting. It is, essentially, mild teasing at most. And, at the end of the day, Princess is the one who chooses that name. Who realizes she likes being a girl. Who asks to be a floret. Who has to come to terms with that. Camila's grand plan of breaking her in public if necessary doesn't even happen. It just takes a long while to get there. (At least, in word count. The story itself mostly happens over the course of two weeks, which is really funny.)
We seriously cannot recommend Dog of War enough. It is, in our opinion, the best work in the setting, bar none.
Doing this because I probably should. Im making it difficult on all of you though.
1 note- I'll go drink water
10 notes - I'll set alarms to actually care for myself
50 notes - set up a daily productivity system so I stop wasting my time doing nothing.
100 notes - ask my friends to help me buy a skirt
500 notes - get a bra & a whole bunch of other affirming clothing
1k - tell my dad that my gf is also trans
2.5k - ask my dad to address me by my prefferred name & pronouns
5k - try to get therapy/psychologist
10k - girl mode at all times (start actively wearing makeup/clothing/doing voice training around people at all times)
50k - start transitioning (0% chance)
Asfgg. It feels surprisingly good to have a bunch of strangers who want me to be happy
I have now set up alarms for eating, waking up, and hygene related stuff. I seriously doubt we get to 500, but this has made me significantly happier •Ꮂ•
Doing some math... 25 notes in 4 hours. 6.25 notes per hour. 8000 hours or 333 days until this hits 50k. Hrt in a year ig.
reblogging again bc thats not enough notes
Gotta take gender exploration as seriously as possible
(I also kind of think that "start transitioning" begins with your self exploration. Like, if you're girlmoding, you've started in my book)
Fair. Ill rephrase it
I've read this article written by SEVERAL news sites. Big things they all emphasize:
WOW do we as Americans have shit healthcare compared to similar nations, that is FUCKED UP
Most Olympic athletes are working class people who can't even afford healthcare unless it's something the American Olympic Committee agrees to cover. Some have been outright homeless while training for the games. Holy fuck is that ALSO fucked up.
I want this to go So Fucking Viral. Maybe if it involves our Sports People on the World Stage more Americans will give something of a shit.
Look, if you don't get the urge to just bury your face in a belly and kiss it and knead it like dough and occasionally bite it a little, then I don't exactly think we're on the same wavelength
And no tumblr, I don't need tags. True believers will find this.
I don't know about the rest of my Transfemme sisters, but a hidden benefit to HDG is that for the first time in my life I am able to read and really identify with characters in fiction and that is incredibly rare.
TL;DR: We're looking for English-speaking neopronoun users (aged 18+) to participate in a paid linguistics study.
Hello!
Professor Kirby Conrod from Swarthmore College is recruiting participants for a paid interview study (in-person in Philly or on zoom). Anyone who uses neopronouns for themself, is 18 or older, and is fluent in English is welcome to participate. The study will consist of a casual interview between you and a researcher, a similar interview with a friend of yours, and an exit survey for each of you. Each will receive $15 as compensation for their time.
If you're interested in participating, please fill out this form: (https://forms.gle/YajpkjxGYiwL7RLF6). Filling out this form does not require you to participate; it's just an expression of interest.
Even on Tumblr, neopronoun use is relatively uncommon, so it would be very helpful if folks could reblog this post to help it reach as many neopronoun users as possible.
Kirby Conrod is a cool linguist who's done neat research on the grammar of singular they and I hope they get lots of participants in their new study about neopronouns as well!

creating Cartoons, ideas, entertainment, and assorted novelties.
The animation industry is an absolute trash fire right now, and TBH... I don't think it's going to recover. Not in a form I recognize, anyway.
I could go on all day about the self-hating monster that is the Animation Business, but I've said it all before. Right now, none of the major studios are making much of anything, and almost all of what they are making is "library content". I'm currently doing storyboard revisions alongside a number of other former producers and directors, and I'm lucky to have the work. Once all of the mismanagement and the mergers get sorted, though, there should be plenty of room for more mismanagement and mergers. And the A.I. Don't forget the A.I.
It seems that I either give myself over fully to the souring corporate teat in the hopes that I can pretend that I still live in a world where "the grind" matters. Or I take a risk and make one big push to do... something.
First up:
Billy & Mandy vs. The Entertainment Industry:
This is my interview/reality/documentary show on the making of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy from stem to stern. I'll be talking to as many people as I can who worked on the show about all sorts of different parts of the process. We'll definitely get to voice actors, but the first segment is probably going to be about Billy & Mandy's pre-history and the Big Pick Weekend.
The Upward Expedition:
This is my pick for my indie show. I have a bible. I have a decade of ideas. Time to sit down and tell a story. I want to get some screen sharing going at some point. I'll definitely share artwork as well as the trials and tribulations of getting from There to Back Again.
I'd love to get a Discord server going and provide a place where people can talk about the stuff I'm making (and the entertainment industry in general). I still have enough Billy & Mandy swag left that I'm sure I'll factor that stuff in as well.
In the immediate future, the funding goes to securing a space to do the interviews and probably to banking money for voice actors. I'm still deciding on my update schedule, but it should start in earnest next week.
I'm excited. Pretty scared... but also excited.
More updates to come. Definitely let me know if there's anything specific you'd like to see on the Patreon!
As always, thanks for sticking around!
By far the funniest transition timelines are the ones from trans men where the "before" picture is some teeny little guy with sad baby seal eyes and the "after" picture looks like Kratos
This is one of the top posts in r/transtimelines and it really sums up what I'm talking about
My irl saw this post and sent me this even crazier transformation today! The little guy to Kratos pipeline is real!!!
that guy straight up turned into Funky Kong

Innes Keeper's Formula For Fantastic Grilled Cheeses (for nearly no extra spoons!)
Are you hungry? Do you have a hankering for grilled cheese sandwiches like, way more than a normal person maybe? Great news! I am about to give you the secret knowledge I stole, like Prometheus himself, from the Akashic Records—to bring back to Prudencia! And I’m even doing it without a ten hour long lecture about how the Akashic Records makes me think of idfk, 9/11, and how that relates to sandwiches.
I will, however, briefly say this: You gotta trust me when I say cooking grilled cheeses via this formula WILL grant you Bloodborne Insight. There is no fucking reason that making a grilled cheese this fucking delicious should be this fucking easy. I feel like I’m cheating God every time I do it because it takes (nearly) no extra spoons. And here’s where I show you why.
Scientifically Proven Perfect Extremely Easy Grilled Cheese
INGREDIENTS — SEASONINGS -butter, i usually use 2 or 3 tablespoons per sandwich -garlic cloves, I use 3 usually -a source of heat, like red pepper flakes, or szechuan peppers -a source of spice OR a source of sweetness, such as dijon mustard or honey. slather that motherfucker on a slice of your bread. -a source of herbiness, such as oregano, thyme, sage, rosemary, etc in any combination that goes well together or on its own. if someone tries to tell you that you need it fresh, they’re fucking lying, the 2$ crushed powdered sage is fucking great. experiment with other spices such as ground turmeric if you're spicy
INGREDIENTS - THE METAPHORICAL MEAT OF THE SANDWICH -two slices of bread per sandwich. this is actually a massive influence on your sandwich taste and texture as a whole. a basic white or wheat will still be fucking delicious because like I said, I stole this from the Akashic Records cookbook section and found it under “fucking perfect grilled cheeses forever”. However, if you CAN—getting bread like brioche, texas toast, brown bread, rye, or sourdough will make a sandwich already being elevated super easily to “pay 23 dollars at a fancy restaurant” level of elevation.
-one to three types of cheese per sandwich. you can get away with one type but really try for two or three if you can swing it. this is also one of those massive influences over the sandwich—listen, i know, that’s obvious, but stay with me—what matters isn’t the SPECIES of cheese, it’s the TYPE of cheese. getting the deli at your local Safeway or Walmart or whatever and asking for the cheese they gotta cut (or just in general the fancier, better-quality cheeses) is literally the only major requirement that I ask of you. If you are on SNAP/EBT programs, me too, and I promise you: Please do this. Please trust me when I say do not get the cheap Kraft-type cheese because it’s less money. I know it’s a bit extra but it’s only a bit to get like 1/4 or 1/3lb and you have no idea how much I’m actually getting a little emotional about this, because the “rice with butter and beans or top ramen every single day” life is soulsucking and sickening and it is genuinely one of the greatest sources of suffering to human beings I can imagine, I’m serious. Following this formula will genuinely change your life/mental health just a bit because you know that you have one meal that is super delicious, super filling, pretty damn cheap when it comes to how much you get, and super easy to make on days where the idea of doing more than just 15 minutes MAX is gonna make you wanna die.
super sorry for that paragraph btw i just really cannot overstate how this is a lifechanger especially when youre poor/low spoons/depressed. delicious food makes me not be as depressed. this is that.
METHOD
Take garlic cloves and crush them either with the meat of your palm or the flat of a knife or literally anything that would crush good. Take bread slices and put a source of spice or sweetness if you are using one. take a pan and put it on the stove on low-medium heat (aka a 2 out of 10).
Place the butter in the pan, as well as the garlic cloves, the source of heat, and the source of herbiness. Congratulations you have now literally done ALL the extra effort that you need to make a grilled cheese like this. That’s it. No extra dishes. No fussing with amounts or chopping or whatever. That’s it.
The butter will melt in the pan and soak up the delicious ingredients that you also put into the pan. Take each slice of bread and place it in the pan to butter it, OR just take one slice, place the cheese on it, and then put the other bread on. It’s really just a matter of extra effort.
When the bread is in the pan, turn it up to medium heat (5 out of 10) and just sorta let it sit for a bit. When you can see the cheese start to get visibly melty—or when you vibecheck it—flip it once and just do the same thing.
When you’ve grilled your cheese on both sides, take it out of the pan and put it on a plate (or just a paper towel to save on dish spoons. btw paper plates and plastic utensils are a fucking godsend if you hate dishes and/or can’t do them very easily/takes a lot of effort.)
That’s literally it. I really hope this helps.
outta my way gayboy im making this sandwich
oh. oh my god. holy fuck. what. how. why. this is delicious. i kinda burned my bread and my cheese didnt melt all the way but it's still the best thing ive ever tasted?????
oh my god. this is so fucking good. the butter melting and absorbing the spices and herbs already smelled amazing, but then i threw the bread on and it started smelling EVEN BETTER. then i took a bite. holy FUCK this is better than sex. i legitimately believe that Innes Keeper stole this shit from Prometheus, there's no other way to explain why this is so easy to make, yet so FUCKING good, other than cheating a god.
I didn't steal it from Prometheus he's my trophy husband!
ok me and my partner went back and made this. exact words upon eating were “we’ve cheated god” and “i feel like my world just got rocked” and then we were both energized to get back to drawing. proof:
please make innes keeper’s scientifically proven perfect extremely easy grilled cheese
I'M PUTTING THIS ON THE FRIDGE (WHERE I KEEP ALL MY CHEESE)
Just had a dream that a novel exists which is written from the POV of an old man dying in the 1920s in the form of diary entries and bit by bit it's revealed it's actually a closeted trans woman who was out during her youth and forced to recloset and now I desperately want to read it
The narrator was like, referring to a girl called Sarah in all the writings, and at the start it's super unclear who Sarah actually is and it's speculated by the people around that she may be a lover from the narrator's youth, until it's noted that Sarah had heterochromia and that's the defining trait of the narrator
Oh also Sarah did actually have a lover. They were T4T and lived in a little cottage by a lake until he was drowned in it and Sarah couldn't make ends meet anymore and had to recloset
Okay a bunch of people have told me to write the thing now so I've decided if this post gets 30K I'm turning the thing into an epistolary novel.
Here’s a small, pretty personal comic, about how growing up with undiagnosed autism has led to me struggling to share negative emotions with other people. (I think unfortunately many can relate to this)
